Garry’s Mod, a sandbox of endless ideas and possibilities. creativity thrives in this world. Just join an online game and you will see a variety of unique creations. This project began as an experiment for a concepts class, the project was about location. I thought about natural environments, to me a virtual environment is a natural environment. I didn't have time to learn code and design a virtual environment, so I needed to think of an alternative. Looking at my Steam library, I saw Garry’s Mod. My search was over, I then used the stock resources to build three installations. When critique day arrived, I displayed my installations to the class. While playing online, exploring Garry's Mod with other users, I noticed a large variety of creations. So at the end of my critique, when my professor asked “What's next?”, I explained I wanted to open the environment up to others to create their own unique installations.

The goal is to display a wide variety of creations to showcase the communities creativity.
Everyone is invited to create their own unique creations within this project for a Garry’s Mod Exhibition.

The resources available are from valve retail games.

If loading file from outside the steam workshop

Place file in C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod\saves

*Users steam directory may be different than the one posted above.

Click Saves from main menu, and load gm_exhibition


There will be a preloaded 8x8x8 and 4x4x4 template to help with volume.

Place Holders
Cubes, will act as place holders

*There will be 2 files at all times

**Original: in case the place holders reduce Frames Per Second

Not all users will have the resources available to view the original installations.
This is fine, just know the original installations will look like the screenshots above

I have added an additional examples using stock Garry's Mod resources

Size

User is allowed the volume of an 8x8x8 Cube show in screenshot.
*You do not have to use the template, it is there for reference


You may install your piece anywhere within the map that does not conflict with the rules.
  • User can reserve a space. (to prevent low FPS, place holders will be used for other users work)
  • Reserved spots are only valid for 45 days after reservation.
  • Cubes will be set in locations of reserved spots and completed pieces

Pieces do not have to be stagnant, but they can not damage the world or anyone's piece
*User can damage their own piece

Lighting
User can go outside of their space to light their piece(s) (if needed)

*The final piece(s) may have to be revisited if requested upon. Lighting may need to be adjusted if it interferes with another piece in the final version.

A collaboration gets double the volume.

@mecha poodle I added a new example for users who do not have all the valve engine game resources. Mind you it is just an example, you can create anything you like within the rules.

Also by putting limitations on the project it makes the user think about the resources and project more carefully.

@mecha poodle ok, I am using resources from multiple source engine games. I am assuming you do not have them installed. I will make a new example with the basic garry's mod resources. thanks for bringing this to my attention.
