“From radroaches to deathclaws — every monster has a story.”
💀 1. Deathclaws

“The apex predator of the Wasteland.”

Lore:
Originally created by the U.S. military before the Great War for close-quarters combat, deathclaws were genetically engineered from Jackson's chameleons, with DNA from various species like reptiles and humans. They were designed to be unstoppable melee monsters — and they succeeded. After the bombs fell, some escaped into the wild, mutated even further, and became one of the most feared creatures in the post-apocalyptic world.

Variants in Fallout 4:

Deathclaw

Albino Deathclaw

Glowing Deathclaw

Mythic Deathclaw (the worst nightmare)

🧟‍♂️ 2. Feral Ghouls

“Once human — now mindless husks.”

Lore:
When people were exposed to extreme radiation but didn't die, some became ghouls — still human in mind but severely decayed in body. Others weren't so lucky. Feral ghouls are humans who lived too long under radiation, losing their minds over time. They’re tragic reminders of what radiation can do — and many still wear remnants of their pre-war lives.

Fun fact: Some can still be found in old uniforms, hospital gowns, or wedding dresses.
🪳 3. Radroaches

“Big. Ugly. And everywhere.”

Lore:
Common cockroaches mutated after the nuclear war into these enormous, radiation-resistant pests. While they’re often more nuisance than threat, they serve as an example of how even the smallest creatures can adapt and survive in the Wasteland.
🦅 4. Stingwings

“Mutated mosquitoes from hell.”

Lore:
Stingwings are thought to be descendants of mutated dragonflies or scorpionflies. They evolved into venomous, fast, flying predators that can overwhelm even armed survivors. Their buzzing is a bad omen — they often travel in groups and attack without warning.
🐜 5. Radscorpions

“Silent burrowers with a lethal sting.”

Lore:
Once just desert scorpions, the radiation and fallout turned them into hulking, armored monsters capable of burrowing underground and ambushing prey. Some theorize their size and toughness also come from military experimentation, not just radiation.

Terrifying feature: They teleport underground in combat.
🦀 6. Mirelurks

“The Wasteland’s crustacean horror.”

Lore:
Mirelurks are mutated crabs, horseshoe crabs, and lobsters, depending on the variant. Over time, they adapted to the irradiated waters of the East Coast, developing thick carapaces and an almost hive-like social structure. Some even worship the “Queen” in certain cults.

Variants:

Regular Mirelurk (crab-like)

Mirelurk Hunter (lobster-like)

Mirelurk King (more humanoid and amphibious)

Mirelurk Queen (gigantic, acid-spitting monster)

🦇 7. Bloodbugs

“Vampiric blood-suckers on steroids.”

Lore:
Bloodbugs evolved from mosquitoes, and they’ve grown grotesquely large and aggressive. They feed on blood and are known to drain victims dry in seconds. They're especially dangerous in swamps or fog-covered areas.

Tip: Watch for their glowing red abdomens — they’re full of blood.
👻 8. Ghouls (Non-Feral)

“Not all monsters are mindless.”

Lore:
Though technically not enemies, many people fear ghouls. These are radiation survivors who retained their minds but suffer prejudice from normal humans due to their decayed appearance. Some become companions, like Hancock, the ghoul mayor of Goodneighbor.
👾 9. Super Mutants

“Failed attempts at creating the perfect soldier.”

Lore:
Created via the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV), super mutants were once human. The Institute (in Fallout 4) continued these horrific experiments, producing many of the Commonwealth’s mutants. They're big, dumb, strong — but some, like Strong or Virgil, show intelligence.

They’re not monsters by nature, but victims of twisted science.
🧬 10. Synths

“Are they machines, or people?”

Lore:
The Institute created synthetic humans — or synths — some indistinguishable from real people. While not always “monsters,” Gen 1 and 2 synths are robotic enemies, and Gen 3 synths create huge moral and philosophical debates in the Wasteland.

Some synths rebel and seek freedom — others obey their programming blindly.
🦴 Bonus: Legendary Creatures

Sometimes you’ll run into “legendary” variants of enemies — stronger, faster, and capable of mutating mid-fight to regain health. These serve as elite foes and drop rare loot. There's no special lore per creature, but radiation and FEV are the usual culprits behind their mutations.
