The Bering Project was a dangerous expedition, but it wasn’t the kind of danger that you could threaten with the barrel of a gun. Colonists anticipating hostile environments wouldn’t need guns for combat, but they were required to blast apart smaller asteroids.

The Napir Scout Model One - or the N-S1, was stored inside the Napir, to be used to protect its host ship from debris. The Almagest was, after all, a united colony. The idea that its people would need weapons to defend themselves from each other was absurd. Once the Napir safely arrived at its destination, the N-S1s were used as cheap scouts, until resources could be obtained to build their more functional cousins.
