What Are Investments in Big Ambtions?
Investments in BA are primarily a way to shield your money from the negative interest the bank charges on a weekly basis for large cash balances. You can also make a bit of money, but the amounts will be insignificant next to what you make from your businesses until you have hundreds of millions or billions in investments.
Available Investments
There are two banks with three funds each:

Jensen Captital:
  • Euro High Energy - Medium Risk (-5% - 10%)
  • Franklin US - Low Risk (-1% - 3%)
  • Alliances Technology A - Low Risk (0% - 5%)

Vantander Bank:
  • Lace Global A - Medium Risk (-8% - 15%)
  • Asia Dynamic - Medium Risk (-2% - 10%)
  • HG China Bonds - Low Risk (0% - 4%)
Investing Strategy
Unlike the real-world markets, the investment returns in BA don't seem to change very often, so you're generally good to pick the the fund with the best return right now, and just check back once per week.

The problem is that you can't see what the investments are doing unless you have money in them. So, once you can spare $6,000, call/visit both banks, and put $1000 in each one. After that, they'll all appear in the EconoView screen. Note that the percentage gains will be a bit wonky for a week after you add money, because it doesn't seem to account very well for the difference between investing and market gains. You will be able to look at the trends, though, and pick the best current investment.

Once a week on Sunday (negative interest hits on Sunday night), check EconoView. If the fund you currently have your money in is still the best, you only need to dump any excess funds into that one. The banks are only open 10:00-14:00 on Sunday, so it's easy to miss.

If you notice that the market has changed, cash out of your current chosen investment, put $1000 back in (so you can monitor it), and put everything in the one with the current best return.

If you need capital, just cash out, and immediately re-invest everything but what you need until the next Monday.

It's that simple! Just make sure your Sunday ritual includes checking investments/clearing out your cash on hand, and you'll avoid negative interest, and make some money, too. You might have a few days of negative returns if the market turns during the week, but generally not enough to worry about.

You will also need this because later Uncle Fred will ask you to get to the bank to get a loan. You will have to do that but want to pay it immediately too.

I also suggest if you are starting out start investing in low valuation buildings in the starter district. Do not open the first business right away when Uncle Fred prompts you to do so but keep working at El Gato and doing delivery jobs until you get a solid starter bank account. This combined with real estate should give you a solid boost for your first business. Either a Law Firm (Office) or Gift Shop (Retail) seem to be the best starter options. I do prefer the Law Firm because of how low maintenance it is and how profitable it is.

Correct. I am at the end-game (waiting for updates quest from Uncle Fred). There are 2 types of real estate: Rival owned real estate and city hall real estate. I suggest investing in the 2nd one first if you are low on cash because the city hall will demand that fixed value for you to get the building. The rival owned buildings depending on how bad or neutral business relationship it is might be higher or lower demands compared to the building valuation. Even with some closed businesses for temporary renovation I am still making more money than with the casino boat method. Not to mention this is fixed values, even with empty buildings. So even a couple of empty warehouses are making me some cash. The rule of thumb is the more you buy the more cash you get and so on.

@ModerNertum: so you are BUYING real estate? That has to be very late game - very high amount if cash neccessary, right?

Or invest in real estate. No risk, lots of return. I tried a lot of bank investment solutions but nothing. Started investing in real estate and start getting the money. Why? For starters this is not considering hostile takeover if you do it to an AI controlled business but now the business owner will be "forced" to pay you a portion of their profits to keep their businesses. This cumulates the more buildings you own. I tested real estate on empty buildings and even then I was getting return from that. I do this now to every building I might want to take over in the future, the size interests me or are affordable investements. This is even better compared to the casino boat where it is always a game of chance. Right now in EA 0.9 real estate is the most reliable way to get profit.
