On October 12, 1984, the Soviet task force BSMTF-84 transits the Sea of Marmara, en route to the Dardanelles and into the Mediterranean. The force, led by the formidable TAVKR Vilnius, an Orel-class aircraft carrier, is deployed to participate in joint exercises with Syria, showcasing Soviet naval power in a region of strategic importance.

The transit is tense, with NATO forces shadowing the task force to monitor their movements. Among them, the USS Fox (CG-33) maintains a close watch, reflecting Cold War mistrust.
