Recent intelligence reports from Norwegian Defense Intelligence and confirmed analysis from U.S. spy satellites have revealed unusual Soviet military activity in the North Atlantic and Norwegian Sea. The nature and intent of this activity remain unclear but coincide with heightened Cold War tensions have left NATO leaders concerned. Preliminary assessments suggest the possibility of Soviet naval deployments aimed at asserting control over vital maritime corridors or testing NATO's readiness. The Soviet naval group has pushed into the North Sea and has continued to push further south.

In response, NATO's Atlantic Command (SACLANT) has initiated Operation Sentinel Shield to gather intelligence, maintain maritime security, and counter any emerging threat to NATO assets or territory.

SSN-681 was deployed from Bergen, Norway and has been trailing the fleet. Reported sightings of subs in the area have not been confirmed but are suspected. With the way that the Soviet fleet is moving, it seems they are going to try to intercept an important convoy on its way to port in Esbjerg, Denmark. With the size of this Soviet surface fleet, the US has dispatched a second convoy from Rotterdam. The UK has offered units from their Marham RAF base to support the convoy escort with whatever they need. The convoy must make it to Esbjerg. They are carrying equipment vital to providing stability to the northern NATO countries. A loss of this convoy would be devastating to the security of the Baltic Region.
