Vanilla Food Variety Expanded

Description

Check Change Notes for details.

Vanilla Food Variety Expanded is a lightweight mod that aims to add a little bit of depth to the colonists, and it does so by rewarding you for providing your colonists with decent food variety. After all, it feels a bit unnatural that your colonists are more than happy to consume rice simple meals for every meal of their life, forever.

Now, each colonist will remember a certain amount of meals they last consumed, as well as the ingredients of these meals. The more varied the meals and ingredients are, the happier your colonists will be. On the other hand, providing them only with one ingredient in the form of one meal, forever, will make them miserable.

Furthermore, each colonist now has a favourite meal or ingredient, which will count as two different meals/ingredients when consumed!

Unlike other similar mods, we do not patch the food searching job, which means it should have almost no effect on performance. As our mod takes the average of both meals consumed and ingredients consumed, there was no need to have the pawn look for specific meals to satisfy their variety - this will come naturally simply as they eat stuff.

A: Can I add it mid-playthrough to an existing save?
A: Yep!

Q: Will my pawns automatically pick meals that are the most beneficial to their variety?
A: Our mod takes into account the average of meal variety and food variety, which means looking for specific meals is not necessary. As such, no such checks are done, which in turn saves performance by a lot.

Q: Can I adjust the amount of required variety in mod options?
A: Of course! You can decide how many meals and ingredients are ‘remembered’, and how different they need to be to provide the mood bonus.

Q: Can I adjust the mood gain and loss from not meeting variety in mod options?
A: Yes, you can make it less or more impactful on the mood if you so wish.

Q: Does this work with Combat Extended?
A: Of course.

Q: Where can I see the ingredients remembered?
A: Simply go to the Needs tab and then select the little info button underneath the food variety need.

It'd be "neat" if the food variety was somewhat tied to Pawn's expectations. That way those with down-in-dirt expectations would be content and well off with few, solid choices and those with sky-high expectations would have an absurd food variety requirement because they expect the whole 'Rim to cater to their culinary whims.

Food preference is kinda broken since half of pawns's favorite food is some type of egg, since they overwhelm all other ingredients from their sheer amount + fertilized & unfertilized variants.

Would it be possible to request that the food variety moodlet be adjusted based on expectation/tech level?

It's a little silly for my Paleolithic cave men to be complaining about the food variety when they can't even grow or cook food.
I figured out a way to change a pawn's favorite ingredient, which is to edit the save file rws. You can find each pawn's food data there (pawn's aren't named so you'll have to memorize what their preference was to recognize them by id), but obviously make sure to use a proper def or you'll probably get some kind of error.

Personally I wasn't interested in cheesing the system, but like to play as custom characters and people I know, so I'm happy to be able to do this :)

We can even see that it's an on/off switch in this image.

If it was in increments, "per ingredient" then for example with "3" being the base ingredient variety:
If there was +2 mood bonus per ingredient then 4 ingredients would give +2,
5 would give +4,
6 would give +6,
7 would give +8.

This would be much more rewarding than just doing the bare minimum and getting nothing more for doing more. Nothing at all for being 1 step away from the threshold.

Great mod because it actually encourages players to feed pawns a higher variety diet instead of the same cheap 1 ingredient meal every time. My only concern is how binary this mod is.

There is no sense of "gradual" increase.
I wish the mood increase was based on "per ingredient" so for example every +1 ingredient adds +1 mood.

Currently as it is this mod makes mood either negative, neutral or positive in few fixed numbers. There is no small increments.

hi! is there any way to manually set or change pawn's favorite food? I'd like to customize pawns more and change favorites when I get random weird foods from other mods, but I can't seem to find anything under debug actions or anywhere else

Ok, since you didn't really answer my question, and in fact ignored the most important part of the question, let's rephrase that again:

If one ingredient type has to be restricted due to their ideology, is using an extreme variety in the other ingredient type enough to still avoid penalties?

If I'm making nothing but simple meals over and over again with nothing but mushrooms, of course that'd trigger the penalty; I'm not that stupid.

But if I'm making a mixture of fine, lavish, and gourmet meals that all use mushrooms, but also use pork, venison, beef, chicken, eggs, milk, insect meat, and insect jelly, is that still going to trigger the same penalty? Is using 8+ different kinds of meat enough to counteract only being able to use 1 kind of plant, or does only using 1 plant completely tank the variety score on it's own?

If that's not enough, maybe it's worth considering adding a few new food crops to VPE: Mushrooms that output something other than simple raw fungus.
