Using Gistix Portal 2 VR MOD with Portal Stories: Mel
By Amish Robot
Gistix Portal 2 VR MOD works with Portal Stories: Mel out of the box.
Only necessary change is to the viewmodel position via simple config file editing.

How to Use
  1. Download the latest release of Portal2VR.zip from github.com/Gistix/portal2vr
and extract the files to the folder containing your local files.
    (steamapps\common\Portal Stories Mel)

  2. Fix the viewmodel offset in the VR config file with these values:
    (VR\config.txt)
    ViewmodelPosCustomOffsetX=12 ViewmodelPosCustomOffsetY=10 ViewmodelPosCustomOffsetZ=-10 ViewmodelAngCustomOffsetX=-10 ViewmodelAngCustomOffsetY=-18 ViewmodelAngCustomOffsetZ=0.0

  3. Connect your headset, then launch Portal Stories: Mel with these launch options:
    -insecure -window -novid +mat_motion_blur_percent_of_screen_max 0 +mat_queue_mode 0 +mat_vsync 0 +mat_antialias 0 +mat_grain_scale_override 0 -width 1280 -height 720

  4. Load into a chapter.
    • You should be able to navigate menus with left thumbstick and right A/B buttons.
    • SteamVR Desktop interface or an actual mouse may be necessary to access some UI elements.
  5. The camera height will likely be very tall upon loading in.
    • To recenter the camera height, click the left stick.
    • To see the HUD, aim the controller up or down.

Please note that although motion controls for the Portal Device and grabbable objects are supported, there are still some in-game elements that use the HMD camera position.
  • For example, laser redirection cubes use the HMD camera to rotate while being held.

  • The aim assist feature also uses the HMD camera rather than the controller position,
which may be useful to keep in mind if you have trouble aiming.
That's right, it might actually be useful to literally "ADS" with Old Reliable in VR.
Troubleshooting
If you have no audio:
  • Go to steamapps\common\Portal Stories Mel\portal2_dlc3 and execute UpdateSoundCache.cmd

If the game isn't loading in VR:
  • Try opening SteamVR before the game
  • Disable SteamVR theater in Steam settings
  • Ensure that launch options have been entered correctly

If the game is stuttering, try:
  • Steam Settings -> Shader Pre-Caching -> Allow background processing of Vulkan shaders
  • Ensuring that the game window is top-level and in-focus (actual mouse may be necessary)

If the game is crashing, try:
  • Lowering video settings
  • Disabling all add-ons then verifying integrity of game files
  • Re-installing the game
Things that need fixing
  • In-game UI and pause menu are broken. "Mouse" input doesn't work in-game, but you may be able to navigate with left thumbstick and right A/B buttons.

  • Pre-rendered cutscenes do not display correctly in headset.

  • Portal Device lighting effects do not align with viewmodel.

  • Some in-game elements still use HMD camera position instead of motion controller position.

  • 6DoF and Roomscale need to be reimplemented, in-game player position is locked to center of playspace instead of physical roomscale position.

  • CPU is underutilized in Portal 2 VR MOD. Performance in Portal Stories: Mel VR MOD suffers even more for this, especially in certain areas.
