Fix Lag Spikes and Crashes (NVIDIA)

This guide is about how to solve Lag Spikes and random Crashes (NVIDIA + Windows (might work for AMD as well))

Delete ShaderCache Folder and verify game files

Delete the Shader Cache folder from the Steam installation directory /steamapps/common/Detroit Become Human/ShaderCache and verify the integrity of the game files via Steam after deletion of said folder. Verifying is done by navigating to your Steam Library, Right-Clicking on Detroit Become Human > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files

I recommend that you try out and see if the issue persists. If yes, follow the next step.

Edit VK (Vulkan Layer) Steam Files

If the issue persists, open the Steam client folder (usually Hard Drive > Programs (x86) > Steam), and find two files: SteamOverlayVulkanLayer.json and SteamOverlayVulkanLayer64.json.
Open them in Notepad and change the parameter value in the
"enable_environment" line:
{"ENABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1": "1"} to 0.

It should be: "enable_environment": {"ENABLE_VK_LAYER_VALVE_steam_overlay_1.": "0"}

Save your changes and change the file attributes to READ ONLY. Right-Click on the file > properties > general tab > read-only

This will have the side effect of no longer having the Steam Overlay in Detroit: Become Human.

And I highly suggest playing the game again and seeing if the issue is fixed before proceeding with the next step.

Unplug monitors (if applicable) and perform a "clean boot" in Windows

These steps are more severe as they impact your Computer more.

If you have played the game after the previous steps and it still crashed (or if you just complete all of these steps at once) make sure you delete the ShaderCache folder (again) like in Step 1 and verify the game files and DON'T START the game before proceeding with the next steps.


Unplug all but one monitor from your Computer.

Additionally perform a clean boot for Windows.
WARNING: This may cause programs on your Computer to stop functioning properly! Usually they should all start working again if you just enable the service again or make said programs install them again once opening said programs!

TL;DR disable all auto start programs via Task Manager and disable all 3rd-party services in msconfig and restart your PC.

Steam will try to install another service when you open it because we disabled a service that Steam was depending on, proceed with the automatic installation and open Steam again.

Then try playing the game, the problems should be fixed now.
