Oil Shortage - Back To Steam #2: Donner Pass Stranded Car Rescue I

Description
This is a continuation of the 'Oil Shortage - Back to Steam' series, and is scenario #2.

After dropping off 12 coal hoppers each at Truckee and Norden, you, your fireman, and the conductor walk to the caboose for a rest break, then grease and re-lube the #3985 Challenger. After then turning the locomotive around in the repaired and enlargened Norden Turntable and after recoupling the repair car, it's time to get back at it. First is the retrieval of the caboose, then coupling up the stranded container cars at Norden so you can then head down the mountain back to Truckee, where three more strings of cars are waiting to complete their journey to the Sparks yard.

How good are your downhill braking and shunting skills with a steamer? They better be sharp, especially your braking skills, as when you leave Truckee, you're gonna have a long and very heavy train behind your engine that does not want to obey the 40-45 mph track speed limit!

Just remember, steamers actually do have their own form of active, dynamic braking, just as diesel-electric locos do, and you would be wise to take advantage of #3985's active braking abilities.

Also, you only have 15,000 gallons of water to work with, as delivering 1,200 tons of coal each to Truckee and Norden used up 10,000 of the 25,000 gallons of water you left Sparks with, and the Norden Water Point has not been brought back into service yet. For engineers who know what they are doing, 15,000 gallons of water should be plenty to get this job done with. Good luck!

This was a wonderful scenario....but iIgot an unexpected derailment just entering the loog-track in Truckee.... therefore no succsessful finish...

The start of #3 is gonna be a bit more laid back, with no stopping on inclines required for one thing. x3

Well this attempt went well! (My Challenger is cursed with random glitches) Very nicely done! More than 50 miles I think as well as lots of switching and maneuvering. Much more than your 'drive from point A to point B' scenario. Looking forward to the next part.

If it was fun now, I can only imagine people will love it even more when I put together version two of it with some actual AI passenger Amtraks so you don't feel completely 'alone' during the run. ^^ Waiting to see if major fixing to Donner Pass actually happens first though.

Start putting on the normal train brake and loco/independant brake when you've got less than 10 mph to go in stopping, so that the normal brakes do the last work of getting you halted. You'll come to a stop and won't move any further as long as you don't release them, so the game will register the stopping attempt successful.

Were you trying to stop with only the reverser, or did you actually use the normal train brake? You have to use the normal train brake for full stops. Using the reverser you'll start moving in the other direction a little even before you get the normal brakes on and the game will register that as a failure.

Also, don't think I've forgotten about doing a third scenario in this series. Learning AI programming is what's holding up #3 in the series, and getting AI Amtraks fully running. That's inbetween a normal day job and having actual real life obligations. XD
