Creature Graphics Extended

Description

!! THIS MOD IS STILL IN EARLY DEVELOPMENT / EXPECT MANY THINGS TO BE CHANGED AND ADDED / IT PROBABLY WON'T LOOK AS NICE AS THE THUMBNAIL !!

Creature Graphics Extended aims to improve upon the existing graphics of Dwarf Fortress' many creatures, adding more variation and visual flair whilst staying true to the style of the vanilla tileset.

If you use my mod in one of your cool forts, take a screenshot (preferrably with 100% zoom so it isn't blurry) and I'll probably include it here, with credit to you of course.

As this mod is still in its early phase, it only contains a handful of changes. Still, you can expect to see these things in game.

  • Humans & Elves have been completely remade to stylistically match Dwarves, with taller bodies and larger head proportions. Goblins & Kobolds have also been redesigned. Their faces are now much more visible and can show a wide variety of expressions.
  • Faces have been deconstructed into indivdual parts. Eyes, ears, nose, mouth and more will be randomly picked for each creature, for a total of 1,000,000+ unique combinations. Pretty good compared to the vanilla 8.
  • Most male and female creatures have stronger sexual dimorphism, and a creature's sex should now be more easily communicated at a glance.
  • Creature skin and hair tones have been tweaked. There is now a mid-range skin tone and a black hair tone, to further diversify the look of your citizens, and the color palettes have been redistributed more evenly for this.
  • Wieldable equipment will accurately shown in the appropriate hand it's being held in.
  • Entirely new graphics have been made for almost all clothing and armor apparel. Weapon & armor materials for Humans and Elves are also properly shown.

I have many ideas for the future, but it takes a very long time to implement features. This is how the roadmap looks like right now, though it is subject to change as circumstances change.

Soon™
  • Unique corpse graphics.
  • Different weapon & armor designs depending on material.
  • Enhance the look of vampires, necromancers, undead, etc.
  • Children and babies have unique graphics.
  • Improved creature statues.

Soon-ish
  • Improve graphics of sapient, item-equipping races and give them extended layering.
  • Add more variation to non-sapient animals, like colors and breeds.

Um... time is subjective?
  • Completely retexture all animal people, including giving them the same treatment as civilized creatures, with layered graphics.
  • More ways to hold weapons (multigrasp, in mouth, strapped to body, etc.).*
  • Make artifact weapons & armor (at least somewhat) visually description-accurate, instead of one texture for all.*
  • Different context-sensitive poses depending on a creature's current state.*
  • Make faces visually description-accurate.*
  • Visible wounds and dismemberment*

*Not possible currently. Perhaps once more modding tools become available.

  1. Press "Subscribe" on this page.
  2. In the game, when in the world creation screen, press "Mods". There, you must find this mod on the left list and press the on-screen arrow to move it to the middle list.
  3. Once it's on the middle list, move it up with the arrows until it's above "Vanilla Creatures Graphics".
  4. Have !!FUN!!

Will you do <THING>?
If it involves creatures in some way, then probably!

Is this compatible with <MOD>?
If it edits the graphics of any of the main five races, including their equipment, or makes major changes to their raw creature files, then it will most likely crash or cause weird graphic bugs when combined with this mod.

Help! The mod's not working?
Did you follow all the installation instructions? If so then write on the bug report thread the issue you're facing.

I like the graphics of <CREATURE> but I'm not a fan of <OTHER CREATURE>. Can I choose which to use?
Indeed you can. All you'll need to do is go into the mod's folder and delete the RAW file pertaining to the creature you don't want to use. So, if you're not a fan of elves, just delete "graphics_creatures_elf_layered.txt".

Can this be added/removed mid-save?
It would require some tinkering with the save to move the mod in or out,Mods cannot be added or removed from ongoing saves yet, but it shouldn't cause any save corruptions as all changes made are only cosmetic in nature.

Why are some of my dorfs so fugly?
The face randomizer is still in its early stages, and some textures were intentionally made exaggerated to make sure the randomizer was working properly. In the future, I'll be making the exaggerated options slightly less common so that most combinations look normal.

How did you get that font?
It's called Bungee, and you can find it here![djr.com] I had to add the serifs and the fancy patterns to it manually, though.

Why Extended and not Expanded?
Next question.

May I give feedback/offer suggestions/ask a question?
Of course! You could do it in the comments below, or even better, on the Kitfox Discord![discord.gg] I have a forum post there for all sorts of comments.

Can I use assets from this in my own project?
Sure! I don't care what you do with any private projects, but if you're publishing it publically and you're taking large chunks of the RAWs I'd appreciate being credited. If you publish it and use any of my graphics then credit must be given, though. See the "LICENSE" below for clarification. If you're still confused I'd be happy to answer any question you have.

This mod is apparently no longer in development. I made an updated version, though.

There is no workaround, only brute force modding, which I have done in my own mod, CGE Redux. It uses this mod's assets, with a great deal of modification, and improvements/additions for portrait art.

@Evenko same here... did you guys found a fix or workaround?

I know it might sound uncaring of me about your time, but i would love if you revamped the Monitor Lizard man texture, i love him

@Edjevoorzetje I had this problem and I had to give up this mod until an update some to correct it.

I think this mod is making my dwarven babys have missing textures after the baby update. Anyone else have this problem?

This mod is (apparently) unsupported. Not to make a shameless plug, but if you want a version of this that is, check out my revamp of it. It's got bugs, inevitable with the adventure mode beta updates, but I plan to fix them, and it should still be usable right now.
