Vain Facade (playtesting)

Description
Playtesting mod for Vain Facade custom expansion.
Decks on this mod are considered to be in Beta. They've been extensively tested by me and tested by others as well. They have placeholder art, including all cutouts. They may require minor tweaks but are not expected to change unless issues arise. I am conservative on my designations, so what I call Beta, most would probably consider finalized. Additionally, I won't consider any deck finalized until it's fully arted. As I am not an artist, this will be quite a while.
Music for Environments and Villains is done.
Decks in earlier states are available on my TTS mod. Once decks are finalized, I'll put them up on another mod.

I've committed to trying to fight every boss with Arctis, selected randomly with a random team in a random environment, so as to feed you as much data as possible. Unfortunately, the first two were Dynamo, who's Difficulty 1 (something I *sort of* dispute, but I wouldn't put him above 2 and let's go with the premise) and the Grue Meta-Mind.

I spent an embarrassingly long time plotting how to bring Arctis back from a wipe as quickly as possible before realizing that, actually, Arctis's gimmick was going to eat the malevolent alien intelligence alive as soon as it flipped, which it did.

But I'm still going to try to do a bunch, unless I get really tired of him and realize I'm starting to make a character I really like less fun for myself.

Huh... I thought I alone had more charted, but fair. And again, if the villain can't be solved with infinite damage he's in trouble, and if the battle's a sprint instead of a marathon, he can't reliably use his insane card draw to draw out his whole deck and get infinite damage. So maybe there's an argument.

Balance is tricky for heroes, so it's hard for me to say. I use a type of statistics to figure out hero power developed by YakGuardian. He looks fine on those stats. It does have some issues, so it definitely could be the case that he's too powerful.

For a while I also used a second set of statistics that Sentinels Digital tracks. Those stats were missing for a while but are back now. The new stats currently aren't as good for analysis, but that should change in the future. However, Arctis only has 13 played games in the time that digital stats cover (2025/10/06 to today). I don't know how many games I'd need to wait for in order for the numbers I get to be statistically meaningful, but 13 is nowhere near enough. If you keep playing him and he is overpowered, I should eventually notice in those stats, but I don't know how long it will take for that to happen.

For now, the best I can say is to keep playing him (if you like playing him, of course), and I'll keep an eye on his stats.

To note: he's stupid fun once he catches wind; I'm not complaining so much as concerned he might be a bit much compared to a lot of the competition.

I should note, I'm starting to worry Arctis is *too* powerful; in gamestates that can be solved with enough damage his ability to eventually start an infinite damage loop sometimes feels a bit much... although I acknowledge the gamestate in question also requires a reasonable amount of setup (if only so he can draw out enough of his deck to never run out of Iceworks) and a universal 3+ damage hit on all hero targets to really start cooking off.

Sidenote, I'm sorely tempted to take him into a battle with OblivAeon and see if he can finally chart me a win. I'm concerned he won't have the time to really get up and moving, but...

@IC No worries, thanks for the feedback! A bunch of people have said that they don't care for those two cards, which is why I asked. I've been thinking about changing them for a long time, but I also had someone tell me that Serve and Protect is an absolutely fantastic card as-is and should be left alone.

I always get myself killed with Hot Pursuit, so I've considered easing up the redirection damage. I also dislike that you have to remember damage that was done in previous turns, although that's not a concern for digital.

@SpectralTime
The Baroness/Cloud of Bats issue is a more complicated issue. Realistically I should change the card for a bunch of reasons and remove the interaction with Resurrection Ritual that way, but any change I make to Cloud of Bats is going to be a big change in how Baroness plays. If I made the card behave as the rules say it should, it should put hero cards into play (as hero cards) instead of resurrecting bats, and it should dump all the hero cards into the villain trash when destroyed. Then later, she should start playing hero cards. I think the freeze is just the game moving the bats without displaying the changes. I think that would happen even if I changed it so that the Baroness played Hero cards.

Really Cloud of Bats should just be a target that uses Blood Cards to deal damage somehow and I should just stop putting off making the change, but I feel like people are going to have a lot of opinions about me making that change.

@SpectralTime I've talked to my coder a bit about this, and it looks like the issue you reported with Arctis is a known bug. It's even mentioned in the comments of the code. It's an Sentinels Digital engine bug, however, which means I can't really fix it and it's unlikely to ever be fixed. The same behavior apparently happens with Twist the Ether. The best I could likely do is to do a quality-of-life change on the cards if I can think of one. I could potentially make Cold Front or Defensive Combat limited cards, but that would weaken Arctis in some cases, at least for Defensive Combat.

And the way he needs a long time to setup in order to deal damage is even fitting... that's how bureaucracy works.
IC Nov 3, 2025 @ 1:31am
@Tonitrus oh sorry for real delayed response on my part.
To me, Burgess's main role is to be a effective drawing supporter with scene manipulator as he's very reliable when it comes to getting rid of ongoing and environment cards. So for the damage dealing role almost always the player has to rely on other heroes.
Serve and Protect is already perfect, since it's not only a great card to make him a tanker, but also a reliable method to setup for "Hot Pursuit".
As for "Hot Pursuit", IMO it's already fit the theme of "by the book" vibe and it's very fitting when it comes to late game where some of the heroes are already out. It's getting easier and easier to use. If a player needs more reliable damage dealer, they can't go wrong with PeaceKeeper or Ember.
