Introduction
Greetings! Thanks for checking out my Shovel Knight achievement guide--which happens to also be my first published guide on Steam. I realize for the most part, a lot of the achievements are pretty self-explanatory, but this guide offers a detailed explanation for every achievement, plus the best ways to accomplish and obtain them.

There are a few achievements in which I haven't obtained yet, because I have yet to find the best way to obtain those few. Once I have, I will edit them to reflect my findings.

Also note that some achievements are also glitched. So far myself and many others have found that the following achievements do not unlock upon completion: Untouched, I'm Alive!, and Shovel Economy. There may be others, and I will edit the guide if anymore are found; I will also edit out this paragraph and the Warning messages in my guide once this problem has been fixed.

On to the guide! This game has 45 achievements of various difficulties. I've split these achievements up into four playthroughs of the game, making the most out of each playthrough to focus on a specific series of achievements that work well together. You can, of course, do them in whatever order or however you please, this is just to make things simpler and easier to keep track of.
First Playthrough: The Easy Stuff
This playthrough is just gonna be your first time through the game. Play the game as normal, beating every stage and getting every item and upgrade. You'll also use this playthrough to complete the miscellaneous achievements.

VICTORY!
FINISH THE GAME.
Literally just beat the game. Pretty straightforward!

MUSIC LOVER
OBTAIN AND RETURN ALL SONG SCROLLS.
Update: I've found all the Song Scrolls in the game and am currently compiling a list of all their locations. But the break down is basically: you start with the first 5, 4 in the Village, 1 at Troupple Pond, 2 in the Armor Outpost, 1 in each Relic-centered mini-stage, 1 from the wandering boss Reize, 2 in Hall of Champions, 2 in every main stage--except Clockwork Tower where there are 3 and the final Tower of Fate stage which has 5.

YOU’RE FIRED
FINISH OFF THE BLACK KNIGHT WITH A REFLECTED SHOT.
This should be one of the first achievements you get, if not the first one. At the end of Plains, you’ll fight your nemesis, the Black Knight. One of his attacks is the ability to blast a dark energy blast at you—a blast that can be deflected back at him for some damage. Whittle down his health until he’s nearly dead, wait until he uses that attack and deflect it back for his defeat and this achievement.

ONLY YOU
USE CAUTION AND COMMON SENSE AROUND CAMPFIRES.
At certain points in the game, you’ll cut to Shovel Knight resting at a campfire. Jump to wake him up and before exiting the area to the left or right, dig up the campfire until it's out. Not only will you get extra gold/jewels, but you’ll feel better knowing that you prevented any possible forest fires!

FIRST PURCHASE
BUY YOUR FIRST ITEM.
Buy your first Relic or upgrade. Duh.

PUNGENT
LISTEN TO ALL OF CROAKER’S PUNS.
In the first town, in the area down the ladder and in the room to the right, there will be a frog man. Just speak to him repeatedly until you’ve heard all of his jokes and puns. Don’t just skip through them, enjoy them for what they are—they’re so punny!

JUGGLER
IMPRESS MONA WITH YOUR SKILLS.
In the first town, in the area down the ladder, you can destroy the wall to the left to find a secret room with a very disinterested and bored witch, Mona. You can pay her 100 gold to play a mini-game where she will spawn falling flasks that you can smack into point pads. You’ll need to get 150+ points in a single game to impress her enough for the achievement. Literally just swing your Shovel Blade like a madman at all the flasks and you should get enough points by the end. And don't forget... you CAN hit the flasks in the air, no need to wait for them to fall.

HOOPER
BOUNCE ON THE HOOP KID’S HOOP FOR 5 SECONDS.
In the first town, in the rightmost area, there will be a child rolling a hoop along the ground. Wait until she turns around and starts rolling it the other way, then downstrike onto the hoop repeatedly on the edge, moving along in the same direction it’s traveling; stay on it until the achievement pops. Not as hard as it looks.

TROUPPLE ACOLYTE
DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE TROUPPLE KING.
Once you’ve bought a Troupple Chalice(s) from the Troupple Acolyte, go to the Troupple Pond on the overworld and you’ll trigger a fun cutscene where you’ll meet the Troupple King. Once you’ve agreed to become a follower, he and his Troupple fish will perform a funny dance number and from then on, you’ll be able to fill your Troupple Chalices with any of the 3 Ichors for free at any time.

I SCREAM FOR ICHOR
SAMPLE EACH OF THE TROUPPLE KING’S ICHORS.
Once you purchase a Troupple Chalice(s), you can fill them with one of three different types of Ichor either by fishing up a Troupple fish from a sparkling pit or by simply visiting the Troupple King at Troupple Pond. Just drink all 3 types of Ichor.

RELIC ROUNDTABLE
DEFEAT AN ENEMY BY USING EACH RELIC.
Just kill an enemy with every Relic, except for the Phase Locket.

NICE HAT…
HELP OUT ALL THE MOOCHERS IN THE FANCY SHOP.
In the second town, to the far left there is a hat shop. Inside will be a mysterious man in a trench coat and 3 other villagers. Each villager will request 1000 gold for various reasons. Fulfill their requests and you’ll unlock the achievement. Beware though: once you do, you’ll be attacked by Mr. Hat, and it can be a difficult fight for those unprepared.

HALL CHAMPION
SOLVE THE WOES OF THE HALL OF CHAMPIONS.
Later in the game, you’ll come across a mini-stage called the Hall of Champions. You cannot enter it without paying a 5000 gold fee. Once inside, a villager will let you know that you’re now trapped inside with the rest of them and also find out the Hall is haunted.

In the small stage there are four main rooms with ghost enemies in them. In these rooms will also be small blue orbs that you can smack around, causing a small explosion. You need to hit these towards the ghosts to eliminate them permanently. Once each room has been cleansed of ghosts, the lights will turn back on in that area. Once all four areas have been cleansed, return the central room of the Hall to fight a giant ghost boss. He’s really not that difficult but you will have to apply the same concept of smacking the blue orbs towards him to damage him with their explosions. Once it has been killed, the area will be cleared, and you’ll get some funny dialogue referencing Kickstarter backers and then the achievement will pop.

WELL MET
DEFEAT ALL OF THE WANDERING TRAVELERS.
A-la Super Mario, you will ocassionally find enemies wandering the world map, initiating a mini-stage if you step on their spot. From time-to-time you will also encounter unique bosses wandering the map, of which there are 3: Reize, the Baz, and Phantom Striker. However, defeating these 3 will not complete the achievement. There’s actually a 4th boss that is required—Mr. Hat from the hat shop in the second town; he doesn’t wander like the others, but he still counts towards this achievement.

HALFWAY
DEFEAT 4 OF THE ORDER OF NO QUARTER.
Just beat the first four bosses. I have heard that there is a glitch that you can actually trigger the achievement by also just refighting the same boss multiple times, so whatever floats your boat.

HEY BIG SPENDER
SPEND A COMBINED 25000 GOLD.
Should come naturally over time as you buy upgrades and Relics.

DECKED OUT
PURCHASE OR UNLOCK ALL RELICS, EQUIPMENT, AND UPGRADES.
To get this, you will need to obtain and purchase the following:
- 6 Meal Ticket Health Upgrades (3 from Goatician, 1 after each set of bosses)
- 7 Magic Capacity Upgrades from the Magicist
- The two Troupple Chalices from the Acolyte (you may need to also get all 3 Ichor types at some point, but I'm not sure)
- The following Relics: Fishing Rod, Chaos Sphere, Flare Wand, Phase Locket, Dust Knuckles, Throwing Anchor, Alchemy Coin, Mobile Gear, War Horn, and Propeller Dagger
- The following Armors: Final Guard, Conjurer’s Coat, Dynamo Mail, Mail of Momentum, and Ornate Plate
- The following Shovel Blade Upgrades: Charge Handle, Drop Spark, and Trench Blade

MASTER SHOVELER
PURCHASE ALL AVAILABLE SHOVEL BLADE UPGRADES.
You should already net this achievement if you’ve obtained DECKED OUT or are in the process of doing so. Buy all 3 Shovel Blade upgrades: Charge Handle, Drop Spark, and Trench Blade.
Second Playthrough: INCONCEIVABLE!
This playthrough is to to accomplish the NG+ achievement while also tackling the more difficult achievements that can be challenging. Remember: saying some of these are tough is not an exaggeration, that can be quite infuriating, so if you start to mess up a lot and begin to get upset, take a break! Taking a breather and relaxing for a moment before coming back will help immensely, while also giving you a chance to stretch your legs and calm yourself down again.

You will also obtain the achievements related to amassing a large fortune and not spending money, since in NG+ you carry over everything from your previous game.

For IMPOSSIBLE! and PERFECT PLATFORMER, if you make a mistake in any stage and end up dying, open the menu and return to the map. This will exit the stage and not save anything that occurs in said stage. It may suck rehaving to do a stage from the beginning again, but it beats not having to restart the time campaign. I suggest also keeping multiple saves just in case. If you feel nervous that you may have recorded a death, you can check your death count with the witch lady in the first town--although she'll still have your deaths recorded from the previous playthrough, so I would make a note of what number you start at once you begin your NG+ playthrough.

On a final note: while you can exit out of main stages to reset death counts, you CANNOT do the same for wandering enemy/boss/treasure mini-stages. If you die in one of those, it will automatically boot you out of the stage and save that death, so always be cautious with those.

AGAIN!
FINISH NEW GAME PLUS.
Again, really straightforward. Just beat the game, begin NG+ and then beat it as well.

IMPOSSIBLE!
FINISH THE GAME WITHOUT DYING.
Self-explanatory. You need to complete a playthrough of the game without dying once. If you end up dying in a main stage, just exit to the map to avoid saving that death.

PERFECT PLATFORMER
FINISH THE GAME WITHOUT FALLING INTO A BOTTOMLESS PIT.
Naturally this one should be done hand-in-hand with IMPOSSIBLE! since you can’t die for that achievement anyways. Just don’t fall into any pits. Unfortunately there are no lifelines or items that give you vertical distance, so just be cautious. If you end up dying in a main stage by falling in a pit, just exit to the map to avoid saving that death.

CHECKPOINTLESS
DESTROY EVERY POSSIBLE CHECKPOINT IN THE GAME.
Located throughout each stage are 5 (2 in NG+) checkpoints that can be broken for extra gold, but it also means that if you die, you revive at the last checkpoint—or if you’re breaking them all, back to the start of the stage. It’s probably best to do this one on the same playthrough as IMPOSSIBLE! since you won’t be dying, meaning there won’t be a need for checkpoints anyways.

GET THE POINT
DESTROY ALL CHECKPOINTS IN A SINGLE STAGE.
This will not work in Plains (the checkpoints there cannot be broken). Do this on whatever playthrough you wish, but it is guaranteed on the same playthrough as CHECKPOINTLESS.

PENNY PINCHER
FINISH THE GAME WITHOUT SPENDING ANY MONEY.
Do I even need to say it? Be stingy with your cash! Basically you won’t be buying any upgrades or Relics in this playthrough (or paying off the villagers, or paying the 5000 fee for Hall of Champions).

ORDER OF HOARDERS
HAVE 50000 GOLD ON HAND.
May come naturally if you save up your gold during any of your playthroughs, or you can guarantee this one on the same playthrough as PENNY PINCHER. You should get this quite easily in this playthrough, since you won't be buying anything OR dying.
Third Playthrough: Run, Achievement Hunter, Run!
And finally we come to our last playthrough (unless you just really love the game like I do and want to replay it again and again). The only focus for this one is to complete a successful speed run of the campaign, but in doing so you should avoid going out of your way to get Relics, as that will cut down on your time and will also allow you to get the other final achievement.

Do note: if you do the speed run on a NG+ playthrough, the TRUE SHOVELRY achievement will be null, as you'll carry over your Relics from the previous playthrough and it will automatically fail the achievement. You have to do this on a fresh save file. You can always split these two up as you wish, I'm just trying to reduce the number of required playthroughs.

HURRY UP!
FINISH THE GAME WITHIN 1 HOUR AND 30 MINUTES.
It’s a requirement that every good game within this genre has a speed running challenge, and Shovel Knight is no exception. I plan to do this on an alternate playthrough, so that it’s the only thing I’m worrying about, but once I do it, I’ll post some helpful tips/advice on how to succeed without too much trouble.

TRUE SHOVELRY
BEAT THE GAME WITHOUT COLLECTING ANY RELICS.
Just play through without purchasing any Relics from Chester or any Troupple Chalices from the Acolyte. Become one with your Shovel Blade.
Do Whenever: Misc. Achievements
The following are just a number of miscellaneous achievements that you can easily complete at ANY point of any of your playthroughs. Just take a moment during your playthrough to complete these easy achievements on the side.

DIRT POOR
DON’T COLLECT ANY GOLD FOR AN ENTIRE ORDER OF NO QUARTER STAGE.
Don’t pick up any jewels or gold in a single stage. Be patient when going for this one and just wait for valuables to disappear.

NO DAMAGE!
FINISH ANY STAGE WITHOUT TAKING DAMAGE.
Not that hard, really. The tutorial stage, Plains, counts for this, so if you’re having trouble in the other stages, just replay Plains instead. If you still have trouble: fill your two Troupple Chalices with the Ichor of Boldness (10 seconds of invincibility) and equip the Conjurer’s Coat in case those run out and you need to spam the Phase Locket.

UNTOUCHED
EMERGE UNSCATHED FROM A BATTLE WITH ANY KNIGHT OF THE ORDER OF NO QUARTER.
Don’t take any damage during any of the main boss fights. For those extremely skilled: you’ll likely have no problem with this. But for all others (including me), this is best accomplished in the same manner as NO DAMAGE!, meaning Ichor of Boldness and Phase Locket spam.
WARNING: This achievement is currently glitched. The Feat will unlock in-game, but the corresponding Steam achievement will not. Will update this notification once this has been fixed.

I’M ALIVE!
FINISH ANY STAGE WITHOUT DYING.
Can be done on your deathless playthrough or if you’re not terrible at these kinds of games, you’ll likely earn this one without even trying on your first playthrough.
WARNING: This achievement is currently glitched. The Feat will unlock in-game, but the corresponding Steam achievement will not. Will update this notification once this has been fixed.

SHOVEL ECONOMY
FINISH A LEVEL AND SWING THE SHOVEL BLADE FEWER THAN 20 TIMES.
This one may seem ridiculous, but it’s actually pretty easy. Again, our area of preference is Plains and have the Conjurer’s Coat equipped for extra Magic. ONLY use the Shovel if absolutely necessary, otherwise utilize your Relics for dirt clumps (Fishing Rod for vertical traversal, Dust Knuckles for horizontal traversal) and combat. Once you reach the Black Knight, use your Flare Wand (or whatever offensive Relic of your preference) to deal as much as damage as possible. If you run out, instead of wildly swiping in the hopes of hitting, just be patient and knock back his energy projectile for the last of his HP.
WARNING: This achievement is currently glitched. The Feat will unlock in-game, but the corresponding Steam achievement will not. Will update this notification once this has been fixed.

ON A DIET
FINISH A LEVEL WITHOUT EATING ANY FOOD.
Real easy. In all stages, you will encounter delicious foods that will recover lost health. Just avoid all foods for one stage (whatever stage is most comfortable for you).

REFLECT LORD
HIT ENEMIES WITH A REFLECTED PROJECTILE 30 TIMES.
One of the bonuses of using a shovel for a weapon is the ability to fling projectiles right back to the enemies! Just attack the projectile mid-flight and you’ll knock it back. Hit an enemy with said reflected projectile 30 times. A good place to obtain this is the first main stage: Pridemoor Keep. Later in the stage, there will be a room with 3 Wizzems. The one on the left and the topmost right one can be damaged by reflected projectiles, so just do this, leave the room and reenter the room to respawn the enemies and repeat until you obtain the achievement.

SPARKER
FINISH OFF ANY BOSS USING THE GROUND SPARK TECHNIQUE.
The Drop Spark is one of the Shovel Blade upgrades that is similar to Link’s ability to blast energy beams from his sword. At full health, while on the ground, you can attack to launch a tiny shockwave across the ground. Simply enter any boss with full health and finish said boss off with that ability. If you’re having trouble keeping full health: just bring an Ichor of Renewal to bring yourself back to full health.

Another easy way to get this is by fighting Tinker Knight. His first stage is incredibly easy to avoid taking damage in and if you finish him off in this stage, it still counts as a boss defeat. You just need to beat his second stage normally afterwards and it should pop after that.
Do Whenever: Relic Achievements
Finally, these are the achievements centered around all the Relics in the game. Most of them are quite easy to complete, so again, just take a second during any of your playthroughs to do a few quick runs of various stages to get these out of the way.

Many thanks to the various tips and helpful advice given for some of these (credits to those people are in the Conclusion section)!

Note: the Shield Knight dream sequences that have constant spawning enemies are great for all of these achievements, too.

ARC OF IRON
DEFEAT 3 ENEMIES WITH ONE THROWING ANCHOR.
Really easy since there are numerous opportunities to accomplish this. The easiest spot would probably be in Pridemoor Keep; near the end there will be a long area with a few pits and a lot of Propeller Rats. Just let them line up and toss away! If you mess up, just walk off screen and back on to respawn them.

Another great spot is in Polar Knight's stage, in the spot with the numerous vikings on ladders.

FLYING FEAT
DEFEAT 3 ENEMIES USING THE PROPELLER DAGGER WITHOUT TOUCHING THE GROUND.
A little harder than its predecessor, but still not bad. Again, the best place to do this is the area in Pridemoor Keep with the numerous amounts of Propeller Rats. Let them line up in a descending order and just time your uses as you fall. If you mess up, step off screen and back on to respawn them.

BOOM!
DEFEAT 5 FOES AT ONCE USING THE WAR HORN.
Again, the very best area is the same area in Pridemoor Keep described in the last two achievements. Get near the middle of the area until 5+ Propeller Rats surround you, then blow them to bits.

Another great spot is inside the Alchemy Coin room in the Explodatorium.

CLEARING A PATH
RUN OVER 5 ENEMIES USING THE SAME MOBILE GEAR.
A fantastic spot for to accomplish this is in the Alchemy Coin room in the Explodatorium. Wait for the enemies to line up and throw the Mobile Gear down below. Jump on it to activate it, then jump back up and let it do its work.

KNUCKLE DOWN
HANG IN THE AIR FOR MORE THAN 4 SECONDS USING THE DUST KNUCKLES.
In the Explodatorium (Plague Knight's stage), as you near the end of the level, you'll find a long room where a number of Shovel Knight slime clones are stuck above you. Get under the first one and let him downstrike his way out; once he has, you can jump off his head or use the Mobile Gear as a stepping stool to get up in that area. Then equip your Dust Knuckles, step off and start punching forward through that dirt floor. Make sure to leave a tiny pause between each use, so as to make sure you don't run out of dirt to hold you in the air before the achievement pops.

REFLECTED RICHES
BOUNCE THE SAME ALCHEMY COIN 5 TIMES IN A ROW.
You’re gonna want to use the Alchemy Coin relic when you’re quite high in the air, once you do, quickly jump up and smack it, and repeat, all while keeping up with its momentum. There really isn’t an easier way to do it, unfortunately. If it lands on the ground, just start over, as it will move too fast to catch up to.

Apparently an easier way to get this is by simply utilizing the enemies who have specific parts that deflect attacks, such as the Shield Knights or the dragon in the Plains stage. You can bounce the Alchemy Coin off those parts and then just keep ricocheting it back and forth until you get the achievement.

ANOTHER DIMENSION
COLLECT 2000 WORTH OF GOLD LYING ON SPIKES, WHILE USING THE PHASE LOCKET.
You should just get this if you do the Forest of Phasing mini-stage. If you still haven’t collected enough after completing that, as you progress through the game, just take other opportunities to gather gold on spikes anywhere. It’s not a hard one.

SUPER SPHERE
DESTROY 5 ENEMIES WITHIN 5 SECONDS USING CHAOS SPHERE.
Yet again, the best spot so far seems to be the Alchemy Coin room in the Explodatorium. Once the enemies start clumping together, jump down with the Chaos Sphere equipped and start spamming it like crazy. You should get it no problem. But if it doesn't kill enough in time, just step out and back in to reset the enemies and try again.

FLARE WANDER
DEFEAT AN ENEMY WITH THE FLARE WAND FROM MORE THAN 25 BLOCKS AWAY.
This one may confuse some people. Once you’ve started playing through a stage, in most places, you’ll notice that Shovel Knight will always end up in the center of the screen, making it impossible to get this, since that is too little distance. What I did: start up the Plains level, walk to the right until you see the first beetle enemy, then make your way back to the left until you’re literally pressing against the left side of the screen and use your Flare Wand to kill it once it appears on the right side. This should unlock the achievement.

MASTER ANGLER
SUCCESSFULLY FISH 5 SPARKLING FISHING SPOTS.
While playing through the stages, you may notice sparkles hovering over some bottomless pits. When you see these sparkling areas, pull out your Fishing Rod Relic and cast; when Shovel Knight gets the exclamation point over his head, press the button again to reel in a valuable golden fish worth 350 gold OR a Troupple fish that will give you a random Ichor! Just do this at least 5 times.
Conclusion, Update Log, and Credits
So there you have it, I hope the guide helped you in some manner or fashion. Thanks again for checking out my (first) guide! Check back for changes or updates.

Oh, and I know that it can be hard to read through at the moment with all that text, but giving the guide a facelift with pictures and better ordering is on my list of things to do, once I have some free time. Just bear with me for now.

(I may also make a Song Scroll locations guide in the future for those having trouble finding them all. So look out for that possibility.)

Update Log:
6/29/2014 - Massive update to the guide. Removed an unneeded playthrough, moved achievements around to better fit things, and split the "Do Whenever" achievements into two separate sections. Also updated with new tips/explanations for Relic and various other achievements.

You can get the "Reflected Riches" achievement by just putting a coin anywhere with flat area (starting plains area for example) and then change to propeller dagger to get in front of the coin, bang, repeat etc. it's super easy this way.
