Small point: a two-way track doesn't necessarily mean a bi-directional train. That only depends on if the endpoint stations have a loop or not. I designed all my early-game stations with a two-way track but a loop at each station, so it works as long as there's only one train on the two-way track and the others are waiting at stations or bypasses.
