1) Every barn is guaranteed to have a case in one of the junk piles. Depending on the jobs available it may be faster to go to a barn instead of doing an average of 4 jobs and hoping the RNG smiles on you. Also, every trip to the junkyard is guaranteed to have a barn map in a junk pile, though since there's so many piles there it's generally not worth the time of digging through them just for a map unless you're searching them anyway.
2) Case rewards scale by level. If you're wanting to get lots of scrap or maximize your XP (for the lvl 50 achievement) wait to open cases until you're level 30+ (40+ if you have that sort of patience).
