How To Enable Xbox 360 Button Prompts (PsychoPad)
By MakouBorn
Are you playing Psychonauts with a Gamepad and tired of guessing which keyboard controls correspond to each button? Fear not, simply use PsychoPad and replace all the on-screen button prompts from Keyboard and Mouse controls to Xbox Gamepad buttons.
Things You'll Need
Warning: Both the 1.1 & the 1.1.2 Update are needed for this to work properly. I cannot provide support if you decide to use 1.1 or 1.1.2 seperately. Download Both.

1) PsychoPad v.1.1[]
2) PsychoPad v.1.1.2[]

Note: If you're reading this guide in the Steam client, direct links to Mega may not work. If so, right click both of the links above and choose copy link address, then paste them into your browser.
How To Install PsychoPad
Note: Make sure you run each executable with administrative privileges.

1) Download PsychoPad v.1.1 from the link provided above.
2) Extract the archive into your Psychonauts directory, usually found: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Psychonauts
3) Run the newly extracted PsychoPadLite_v1.1_install.exe and point the installer towards your Psychonauts directory (If not automatically detected)
4) After the installer finishes, Run PsychoPadLite.exe and wait through the patch's "150 Steps."
5) Download PsychoPad v.1.1.2 from the link provided above.
6) Extract the archive into your Psychonauts directory, usually found: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Psychonauts. (Overwrite any files when prompted)
7) Once again, Run PsychoPadLite.exe and wait through the patch's "150 Steps." Again.
8) Run the game and enjoy being able to effectively play it with your Gamepad :)

Windows Users: PsychoPad has had some trouble working with different User Account Control settings in the past so if all else fails, try disabling UAC prior to installing the patches.

Is there a way to alter the patch to use other button icons? For example, can we use PlayStation button icons if you're using a DualShock 3 or 4? Since there was a PS2 version, this should be possible if the UI icons exist or could be provided.

I'd also imagine in the latter case that new button icons could be made for other controllers, like maybe the Wii Classic Controller or Wii U Gamepad Pro.

GOG thread with comments from the original author of this patchcan be found here:

Haven't found any malware myself, so I'm not sure what the comment below from HITACHI Magic Wand (Steam Level 0) is all about.

I'm using the v1.1 version from Voodooman (see GOG thread) on Windows 10 without any problems. Just 2 things: start the patch as Administrator (right-click -> Run as Administrator) and rerun the PsychoPadLite.exe when you create a new profile.

Happy Psychonauting!

I reinstalled the game and reinstalled the patches with UAC disabled and choosing "run as administrator" and now it seems like everything is working correctly. May want to update the guide to mention running as administrator because that seems to be necessary for those of us on Windows 10, I should have thought of that before reinstalling the game. Anyway much thanks for the guide and hosting the patch.:steamhappy:

Works like a champ on Windows 7 64-bit w/ full UAC (but with Steam on a different partition than the system). Huge thanks for this guide! Makes thing sooo much easier.
