John Company: Second Edition

Description
Development of John Company is now complete. The game is in the final stages of editorial review and it will be submitted to the factory in the coming weeks.

The current rules can be found here:

In John Company, players assume the roles of ambitious families attempting to use the British East India Company for personal gain. The game begins in the early eighteenth-century, when the Company has a weak foothold on the subcontinent. Over the course of the game, the Company might grow into the most powerful and insidious corporation in the world or collapse under the weight of its own ambition.

John Company is a game about state-sponsored trade monopoly. Unlike most economic games players often do not control their own firms. Instead, they will collectively guide the Company by securing positions of power, attempting to steer the Company’s fate in ways that benefit their own interests. However, the Company is an unwieldy thing. It is difficult to do anything alone, and players will often need to negotiate with one another. In John Company, most everything is up for negotiation.

Ultimately, this game isn’t about wealth; it’s about reputation. Each turn some of your family members may retire from their Company positions, giving them the opportunity establish estates. Critically, players do not have full control over when these retirements happen. You will often need to borrow money from other players to make the best use for a chance of retirement. Players also gain victory points by competing in the London Season for prestige and securing fashionable properties.

John Company engages very seriously with its theme. It is meant as a frank portrait of an institution that was as dysfunctional as it was influential. Accordingly, the game wrestles many of the key themes of imperialism and globalization in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and how those developments were felt domestically. As such, this game might not be suitable for all players. Please make sure everyone in your group consents to this exploration before playing.

Playing now (19 August 2025) I'm also getting the missing asset. It looks like it's the opportunity markers for the families.

It's very cool that this exists

Is there anything wrong with the opportunity tokens? I can't grab them to mark the family action

Seems like some component can't be loaded. Each time I load the module, or undo with Ctrl+Z, a message appears stating that http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=EH8P39fL failed to load. I don't know what component it is, since I didn't notice anything missing (I just played a couple times 1710 solo against the Crown). It is cumbersome mostly when undoing, since the viewpoint changes and I have to readjust appart from closing the error message.

Otherwise, thanks for creating this cool mod so people can play John Company digitally!

This mod was actually made by Cole Werhle? That is so cool!

This mod would really benefit from scripting the setup of the starting cards for different player counts and associated scenarios. The most tedious part of this otherwise great app is the setup.

How run this ?

Appears that the Firm Strategy and Company Failure decks were imported in a sideways orientation. The cards appear sideways when zoomed in. This setting is not needed for these decks. Unchecking Sideways fixes the issue.

Hi Cole, I've improved your mod a smidge by evening out the snap points, cleaning up the player areas, fixing the hands, and attending to some misspelling. I also created a display for the governorship tiles, named all the ships, etc etc.

Thing is, inexplicably the 1813 setup script is broken for some reason. It does everything it should byt change the company standing marker.

You put out the governorship tiles for the 1813 scenario too ... which shouldn't happen right? Those spaces should be blank with EIC logo visible since the Governor General law is passed.

Oh! And your 1813 setup card is confunding. (Probably more appropriate to place this on BGG). "Return Governor General to box and place its overlay over the Director of Trade." I'm guessing you mean that we should return the governorship offices to the box?
