How to
There is a text file which controls this setting. It is located in the game install directory.

1-Right click the game in your Steam library
2-Click properties
3-Click local files
4-Click browse local files
5-Open gamepad.txt
6-Typing "1" into the file will enable the gamepad/controller support but disable the advanced keyboard functionality / typing "0" into the file will enable the advanced keyboard functionality but disable the gamepad/controller support
7-Save the file
*8-You may need to set the game.exe to run as administrator for this to work (my main pc needed this)
*9-You may need to disable Steam input with your controller type by clicking Steam in the top left corner of the Steam window, click settings, click controller, and disable Steam input for your controller type (You can also do this for the individual game by right clicking on it and selecting properties and then controller and disabling Steam input for your controller type)
*10-Make sure your controller is set as your preferred device in windows. Right click your start menu and click search. Type in "Set up USB game controllers" (without the quotes) and click the app that comes up. Click advanced. Make sure the controller you want to use is selected in the window instead of "None". Click OK and you should be good to go!
Customization
While in game, you can now press F1 and it will open a dialogue window to customize the gamepad buttons. They are named according to an Xbox controller.

THE OTHER SETTINGS INSIDE THE DIALOGUE WINDOW ARE ENGINE DEFAULTS BUT SHOULD NOT BE MODIFIED AS THE GAME MAY BECOME UNSTABLE GIVEN THAT A LOT OF THEM ARE OVERWRITTEN BY THE GAME.

Disable steam input for the game - you can also do this for the individual game by right clicking on it and selecting properties and then controller and disabling Steam input for your controller type -and it should work

Very strange. I tried it on my fiance's pc by just plugging in my controller and doing nothing fancy and it worked immediately there. A friend also tried for me and same thing. Not too sure.

It is not wireless. As it happens, I do have a wired 360 controller. Unfortunately, no joy. When I get a chance I'll check the forums on vx ace, and see if anyone else is having trouble. This rig is a recent build, and its pretty powerful, but directx is what it is, so im doubting that's the issue, thanks for trying. If I come across anything, I'll letcha know. :cozyhitman2:

It's RPG Maker VX Ace. I have heavily modified the engine to customize it, but I still left all the default stuff in there as well. I honestly don't understand why it's not working for you. Is it a wireless by chance? Maybe that could be part of the problem... Not too sure. Do you have a corded 360 controller you could try?

Thanks for continuing to try and help me out. unfortunately, setting the xbox1 controller as the preferred usb controller did not help either. hrm, what engine is this in? I can do some research on my side as well.

Something I found online is to set the game controller as your preferred device. On the start menu, search game controller and it should open set up usb game controllers control panel and then click advanced. Make sure your preferred device is set. Try that out

Oh yeah you said that. Hmm

Hmmm. Okay I'm also on windows 10-64 bit. Let me do some looking into this. I can't really think of why this isn't working for you. For me it works as soon as I get in the menu. No buttons work at all?

Wow, I didn't expect such a quick response:steamhappy:. Okay, so I tried updating xbox controller drivers, launching directly from the directory, pressed f1, then changed every single button option by 1 spot up or down. Then I started a new game, ensuring that the game window was selected. Proceeded through the tutorial, attempted to head north to the shack and engage in battle. at each of the in-game steps I attempted to press every single button on the controller, but no joy. Wasd does not work, but mouse and arrows still do. Got a copy of disgraced on sale last night, and also went back and tried with waste walkers, with the exact same symptoms. I am using an xbox one controller on windows 10-64 bit.

For me, if I launch from INSIDE steam, I must run the game as administrator. If I launch from outside steam, it makes no difference
