Well, I finally got uneducated, isolationist and settlement in one fell swoop on my last game. Now I can start giving my people education so they can be a lot more efficient. Thanks for the help. :D

the only reasons i can imagine why that cluster wouldnt work is when you expand to slow or mess up with the production limits, personally it worked always very well for me and i build on a large map about 12 clusters in row under 20 years with no issues. (3 with tailor and blacksmith)

I see. I've noticed that my food stores always start depleting when I take breaks between expansions, especially when I reach my 4th or 5th cluster, since that's usually the time when the original citizens I start with die of old age and their houses become vacant again. Then a new family fills it, putting in 4-5 new mouths to feed.

I usually try making a four-point star, or 3 if there isn't enough space, where one big cluster is surrounded by 3 or 4 smaller clusters so they can support each other in the event the population goes up too fast. That way, I also wouldn't need to build a blacksmith and a tailor except for the center cluster.

I'm going to try and lower the amount of houses I build after my 3rd cluster to 5 houses each so I don't have my population suddenly spike and smack my food stores in the face. Thanks for the help. :D

i guess you read my guide. (i build 5-7 houses like you)

While expanding those clusters should work fine, if you stop expanding your population will be still raising so you have to take care about that but you also should have more than enough time for that.

You can check if each gatherer/hunter have enough space and max workers for them if you stop expanding.

...and really important is the management of the food limit. start low and raise it if the new cluster is finished so they dont idle and fill the nearby storage barn. i produced always enough that they hit my limit while i finishing the next cluster and i could go further and further.

hope that helps

How many houses do you usually put per cluster? I tried putting 7 on each (6 if I don't put a blacksmith and a tailor) and the results are pretty much random. Sometimes it's self-sufficient, producing a lot of surplus food, sometimes I run out of food too quickly.
