What is ImpactO?

ImpactO is an action-packed arena multiplayer game where you control a spherical vehicle and attempt to defeat your enemies primarily by ramming them, crushing or sending them flying out of the arena and to their doom. You also have various weapons such as rocket launchers, mines and lasers at your disposal and on the level you can find different powerups to give you an advantage.

Our focus on direct physical interaction breaks away from the standard way many action games are played, where bullets and projectiles is the primary way of disposing your foes and running them over with a vehicle is secondary. We've tried to flipped this over by making crashing into your opponents at high speed the core gameplay. The weapons available are deadly in their own right but the rule of thumb is that they are more like tools for helping you chase down your opponent or as a follow-up finisher. We want to have a good variety of weapons with different uses and depending on the game mode different play styles may emerge, but all in all we strive for a fast game with lots of impacts between players.

Speaking of game modes, currently we have 4 of them with a bunch of others in the mind-phase. These game modes are:

Standard free-for-all deathmatch, you get points for destroying other players and everyone is an enemy.

Team Deathmatch
Standard team deathmatch, you get points for destroying players in the opposing team and you can damage your own team mates, so be careful ^^.

Hold the Battery/Flag
Non-standard game mode, grabbing the battery transforms you into a slow and vulnerable bi-pedal robot and you gain points over time while holding it. By bringing the battery to a designated capture-zone and staying inside that zone for a few seconds will discharge battery granting you a whole bunch of points. Suitable for 6 or more players.

Last ball standing on a small arena, you win a round by being the last remaining player on the arena. Extremely quick-paced and suitable for a smaller amount of players.

How did it start? What is the current status?

ImpactO started out as a university project and after our studies were finished we kept developing it. The team consists of 7 people in total and development started for this version in early 2013. The total development time is a little hard to pin down, it has been about 5 months of full-time work and maybe 3 months side-project. But now we have found some more time and we are starting things off with this Greenlight.

Currently we have a fully playable prototype that is quite advanced and feature-rich, you can download it here It is a lot of fun and should give you a good idea about what the game is about. It's recommended to be 4-6 players, Hold the Battery is quite the blast if you are 6 players. Also a good network connection is pretty important, we have done some work to handle latency with client-side prediction ( fancy word ) but there still is more work and testing to do in this regard. It works pretty good with 50 ms ping but strange things might occur. For now there is only a PC-version available for download but we are also targeting MacOSX and Linux.

For those that are interested we do have a Youtube account were we have posted some videos from the development, most of the videos are pretty old and come from our work at the university but there are some fresh that showcase the current status of the game
