IMPORTANT: The patch needs to be installed after you subscribe. See below.

CBP includes:
1) A fix for a major damage bug in the Extended Edition which affects ~28,677 damage modifiers. Without the fix, ALL units in RoN:EE deal or receive the wrong amount of damage.
2) Over 70 more bugfixes, mostly from Misc Fixes.
3) Balance tweaks based on data, testing, and consensus, advised by high-skill players. We try to balance across most game modes and skill levels.
4) A custom-made, open-source launcher to patch (and unpatch) the game.[github.com]
5) Full transparency about all changes made, and why.[docs.google.com]

Check here for more information about what CBP is and who's helped to make it.

Damage bugs in unit matchups
~1,000 damage bugs
~1,000 + 28,677 EE-only damage bugs (ALL UNITS AFFECTED)
None known (all patched)
Additional bugfixes
70+, mostly from Misc Fixes
Multiplayer compatibility
T&P only
EE only
CBP only (Steam EE), but quick and easy to switch EE <-> CBP
Replay compatibility
T&P only
EE and CBP
EE and CBP
Balance changes
Last patch in 2004/2005
Worse than 2004/2005 patch; bugs actually break intended balance
Bugs fixed, further tweaks based on data, testing, and consensus
Skill vs RNG
Ruins / rares often decide games
Ruins / rares often decide games
Lower ruins bonus; some rares nerfed/buffed
Basically just DRM
Basic launcher, no useful features
[OPTIONAL] Open source CBP Launcher with extra features
Somewhat documented
Limited documentation; game balance completely changed due to bugs but never mentioned
Full transparency about all changes made and why
Decent, but buggy
Decent, but buggy
CBP Launcher's plugin system can add functionality and bypass buggy modding systems
Poor by modern standards
Still poor
Still sucks (sorry)

Multiplayer compatibility
All players in a CBP game lobby need the patch when playing patched multiplayer.
To play with unpatched players, simply unload CBP before starting RoN.

Windows 7/8.1: You may need to update .NET Framework Runtime.[dotnet.microsoft.com]

1) Subscribe to the mod and check that Steam has finished downloading the files.
2) In RoN, go to Tools & Extras -> Steam Workshop. Select this mod and press Open Directory.
3) Close RoN.
4) Run CBPSetupGUI.exe, and press yes when asked if you want to start CBP Launcher.

Using CBP Launcher, loading and unloading CBP can be done quickly and easily.

(if you were already using method #2 and it didn't work (despite using CBP Launcher), then either I don't remember how the files are being loaded -- which is possible -- or you've ended up with issues because method #2 is bad and causes issues)

(2/2) If you're really lazy you can try an alternative method which I don't recommend , which is to modify the files directly in \Rise of Nations\mods\Community Balance Patch\. If you do this your game and/or CBP are likely to break if CBP ever gets updated again, and other systems which assume the state of CBP files (such as plugins) may also fail to work as expected.
MHLoppy  [author] 1 hour ago
(1/2) @nate_e Precursor: if you're modifying the files I'd personally recommend not doing so within "the CBP ecosystem" if you aren't already avoiding that. I.e., don't use CBP Launcher with custom versions of files, since that can cause issues with CBP Launcher's tracking of file versions (normal workshop/local mods that don't overwrite files on disk are fine).

I suggest:
0) Have CBP unloaded, and don't use CBP Launcher.
1) Make a copy of the unmodified CBP files which you'll edit. Make a backup of any original game files which you're about to replace.
2) Edit the CBP-copy you made in step 1 to have whatever changes you're after.
3) Overwrite the game files (e.g. in /Data/ and other folders) with your modified files.

This is really a great mod esp the bonus damage fixes. Thank you for all of that, BUT how do I make my own small changes to "Community Balance Patch\PrimaryData\rules.xml" and have them work? Every time I try (small things like adding 20 to commerce limits, x2 attrition) the game simply ignores them. Is it overwriting my changes whenever I launch EE or something?

Roger, gotta drop a few lines there for sure when I get all my thoughts on it together.

@Astriven If you have feedback re: balance please share it when you have a moment to write it all down. The reason the mod hasn't had a meaningful balance update in a year is exactly because we don't get enough discussion about balance changes, and so can't really change anything (no community input on a change = not a community patch). There's a thread for balance that might be more convenient than having to put everything in lots of comments.

Anyway, I wish you the best of luck and gallons of a free coffee (or whatever your poison is) to maintain your project in a tip top shape :3

@MHLoppy - the amount of work you've done here over the years trying to improve this wonderful jewel of a game is simply unbelievable. I wish every good old game could receive such a devoted attention and care.

The only thing I'd change/suggest is to make a separate version of a 'pure fixes' vs 'rebalance additition' (yeah I know it has already been suggested and answered, but anyway), or to make CBP revert not to pure vanilla state but to a 'bug fixed vanilla' state instead. The reason behind this is not because I'm a mindless vanilla purist - I just believe it's the right way to implement obvious and much needed fixes. Personally I can live with the majority of balance changes you've made (yes I've checked the list thoroughly ^_^), but the few remaining I just strongly disagree with - though that's a story for another day and another thread maybe.

@xLordxAtlantisx surprised you can tell such a difference immediately, but glad you appreciate it nonetheless. Although a lot of the work on CBP has been from me, others have helped as well so they should get your thanks too :P

@MHLoppy - I just stumbled onto this mod this week. Well done and thank you for all your time and effort putting this together. The game feels and plays better - night and day difference.
