How To Install Heroes Unleashed.

I had played Ghost Recon a long time back when I was a kid, got the disc and all around 2002 and spent countless nights with my brother taking turns at the controls and screaming while running to Exfil with a thousand rounds going down range right at us. I recently got the game as a gift from a friend and had all those memories flood in all over again, when literally a day before that I had completely forgotten everything about the game and even lost the disc. Re-visiting the game, I can safely say it hasn't aged too well, but it still provides that experience that Ghost Recon as a franchise has lost as time went by so I was still having a blast. I then tripped upon Heroes Unleashed ( the mod ) after being in the same thread on a reddit post as the mod creator himself, and ever since, I CANNOT revert to playing OG Ghost Recon. Because Heroes Unleashed is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Holy Grail, so let me guide you on how to get it !

What Is Heroes Unleashed ? What does it do ?

Oh I'm glad you asked !

First of all, improves nearly everything graphics wise ( except the main menu UI, that's still hard locked to 640 resolution for some reason. ), including the UI, higher resolution textures on player models, gun models ( though there is still no first person weapon model, just the ones you see in the hands of teammates and enemies in the third person. ), enemies, terrain, objects and effects like rain, bullet holes and gun smoke and more !

Cleaner audio, and even better positional audio, if you got a good pair of head phones you can pin point PRECISELY where the bullets or footsteps are coming from.

More realistic ballistics ! Weapons are allegedly fine tuned to match their real life counter parts in many ways, like how easy the gun is to handle and maneuver around with, the penetration power, the weapon's sounds, models, attachments and mag cap.

Reticle matches the sights that the gun has. For example, if your weapon has a Holo Sight, then your reticle will look like it. The weapon will only have a zoom option ( aka mouse wheel up or down / R and T ) if it has a non CQC sights like an ACOG. Also when zooming in with weapons that do have such sights, the sights themselves pop up, giving you a realistic level of peripheral vision like as though you were actually looking down the sights, zoom levels are also calibrated to their real life counterparts, so an ACOG won't zoom in as much as a proper sniper scope etc etc.

GUNS GUNS GUNS ! non specialist units have ATLEAST 300 kits, specialists have around 400+ and also have unique weapons that non specialists don't have access to.

New Maps and Campaign. Enough said ! Though please don't beat up on ApexMods ( the mod creator ) whenever he does his own voice over mission briefing for his custom maps, he is just one guy and did his best... oh yeah did I mention !?

APEXMODS MADE THE ENTIRE MOD ALL BY HIMSELF AND IT TOOK HIM 15 YEARS TO DO IT ALL !

So... be thankful it's completely free.

Quit Your Yapping ! I Want The Damn Mod Already !

Well... you didn't have to be so rude about it... :(

This is the official download link for the mod on ModDB, get the first link v1.0.1 FULL VERSION, not the DEMO.

Now wait for an eternity... the server hosting the download is pretty shoddy, it's around 9GBs compressed in a zip file and once you are done with the guide, it will take around an additional 15-20 GBs depending if you keep the zip file around or not. Go make a coffee, get a family and watch Star Citizen officially leave Beta.

Once downloaded, find your way to your to your steam directory -> steamapps -> common -> Ghost Recon -> Mods

(My Library is on Local Disk C because my hard drive is FUBAR, your's will probably be in F or something. )

Now open up the Zip file you took a lifetime to download and drag Heroes Unleashed ( Yes, the entire singular folder ) into the mods folder. It may not take time for you for everything to be copied over but it took me a literal hour so... proceed with caution.


After all that, you think you'd be done ? Bold of you to assume we live in a perfect world. Launch the game and head over to options, go over to the Mods tab, click on Heroes Unleashed, and select activate. It should take the name to the right side from the left, click accept to lock in the change. Now get the hell out of the game, some of the mod's effects do not take effect until you restart the game. You'll know you've done it right when you
A. Get a completely new intro video
B. Get a completely new mouse cursor, main menu image and background music.




Voila !

You are done ! Now, I hope you found this guide helpful, pleas- wait... where are you going ?!

Heroes Unleashed is the best mod for this game to ever hit and honestly adds beyond enough hours that any sane human would ever need for the game.

I am loving the mod up to now (it has a mindblowing 300 missions and fun gear), but I have to mention that it gives me access to all the missions of Desert Siege, for example, though I do not own it (the briefings, voice acting, cinematics, etc.). I properly installed the "Missing Desert Siege" sub mod.

I don't know if it is intended by the mod, but it was not my intention to bypass the two campaigns sold on Steam. Anyhow, all I have to do is buy the two extensions/campaigns if I want to feel 100% legal.

For those who cannot see the mod or cannot see the extras needed if you do not own the two expansions, you most probably have the wrong folder structure.

The folders must simply look like this (inside your Ghost Recon installation) :

... \Mods\HU - Missing Island Thunder
... \Mods\Heroes Unleashed

1. If Desert Siege or Island Thunder are not present, it is necessary
to install compatibility add-ons for Heroes Unleashed. You find
them included in the mod's "XTRAS" bonus content folder:

"Heroes Unleashed\XTRAS\HU Compatibility Add-Ons\"
