Combined Icon Atlases - Larian Icons

In 1 collection by LaughingLeader
LaughingLeader's Mods - Definitive Edition

Description
This mod optimizes Larian's icon atlases by combining them into one large 4096x4096 texture.

What this means is, in a full inventory with every kind of vanilla item, the total atlases used by Larian's icons will be 1, as opposed to 5-6.

This mod requires the Script Extender (scroll down for installation instructions).

Note: Hardware Requirements
Weaker onboard video cards (like an old intel) may not support 4096x4096 textures.

If you're playing this game on a potato somehow, you may want to check if your video card can support 4096x4096 textures.

The Icon Atlas UI Limitation

The issue with icons in this game is that each section of the UI has an atlas limitation of 7 atlases[forums.larian.com]. Sections of the UI in this case are:

  • Your individual hotbars.
  • Individual inventories.
  • Each item section In the trade window.
  • The status icon area.
  • The memorization window.
Larian's main icons (skills, statuses, items) encompass about 6 different atlases. So in a full inventory, once you start enabling mods that have new icons, you'll start seeing icons visually disappear as they stop rendering when that 7 atlas limit is hit.

With this mod, that 7 limit will be mitigated, since Larian's main icons will only take up 1 atlas now. You can still hit the limit, but now it'll take quite a few different mod icon atlases to hit that.

Script Extender
Norybte's Script Extender[github.com] is required for this mod to work, as it's what allows this mod to override Larian's atlas files.

You can download the extender here:
https://github.com/Norbyte/ositools/releases/download/v38_2/OsiTools-Updater-v38_2.zip

Extender Setup (Divinity Mod Manager)
If the Divinity Mod Manager is installed, and your "Game Executable Path" is set, simply click Tools -> Download & Install the Script Extender.

The mod manager can be found here (read the Setup section):
Divinity Mod Manager[github.com]

Extender Setup (Manual)
  1. Extract OsiTools-Updater-v38_2.zip.
  2. Copy DXGI.dll.
  3. Navigate to the bin directory of the Definitive Edition of the game:
    Divinity Original Sin 2\DefEd\bin
Tip: You can get to this folder quickly by right clicking DOS2 in Steam, select "Properties", then click the "Local Files" tab, then click "Browse Local Files". Finally, open the DefEd folder, then the bin folder.
  4. Paste DXGI.dll into the bin folder, so it's in the same folder as EoCApp.exe.

DXGI Note
If you already have a DXGI.dll in your folder from using Divinity Unleashed, that's the same file. We're using the same extender and are compatible!

Extender Updates
The script extender updates automatically when you start the game, so after it's initially installed, you won't need to download anything manually again.

Is this mod safe to deactivate?
Yes. This mod simply overrides the base game atlases and provides a merged one, so deactivating it will make the game go back to using the regular 8 individual icon atlases.

Support
If you're feeling generous, an easy way to show support is by tipping me a coffee:

I love modding this game, and I love interacting with the community. Every bit helps to keep me doing what I'm doing. Thanks!

Can you explain the meaning of the word 'atlas' in this context.

If only something like this could be made for Spells in the spell book. Drives me mad to get invisible spells and spell icons in the wrong locations.

Thank you so much for the chuckle. I'll be playing on a Potato (HPZBook with NVIDIA Quatro 1000 graphics) I hadn't considered that nods could up the video requirements. I have called laptops worse names than potato!

Would this mod impact the status duration of food items? Things like apple pie? For me they disappear, the status icon, once you activate it. Not for all food items though.

Thank You
This really helps with the problem of submarine/disappearing icons

Correction: Skill_Fire_Fireball is the DOS2 fireball icon, Skill_Fire_FireBall is the DOS1 fireball icon apparently. :lunar2019laughingpig: Windows naturally treats these two names as the same file. I've added Skill_Fire_FireBall back in manually in the latest version, in case a mod is using it.

Should be fixed now.
