Deathrun is a popular Team fortress 2 mod-gamemode. It uses custom-made maps and requires a plugin to play.

Deathrun originated as a sort of weird side-objective-maps for a different mod gamemode known as Versus Saxton Hale or Freak Fortress 2. The first Deathrun plugin was made December 2012, however Deathrun in Team fortress 2 existed since roughly mid 2012. Today Deathrun map servers still run as part of vs hale and FF2 server rotations. Currently there are 30 servers total running Deathrun either full or part-time.

So what is Deathrun?

Deathrun is a gamemodes about running a booby trapped obstacle course and using reflexes, timing and psychlogy in order to avoid death.

The red team plays the role of the “runners.” Their goal is to survive until the end of the map. They must avoid traps and hazards as well as be lucky in order to win. A big part of playing a runner is remembering the layout of traps and having patience.

If the runners make it to the end of the map they usually win, however some maps change what happens next. Some maps give players the choice of what to do. This can range from playing a minigame, to having the roles reversed and having the runners kill the activator with a trap.

The blue team plays the role of the “activator.” This team usually consists of only one player on the server. Players are selected to be the activators based off of a point queue. Playing rounds on a server increases every player’s point total, eventually everyone gets their chance to be the activator. The activator plays just outside of the play-space of the runners. They view the play-space through one-way walls. The goal of the activator is to click on buttons at the most opportune moment to trigger traps and kill runners. If they manage to kill everyone they win the round.

Traps are an important part of Deathrun. Traps vary from map to map but many reappear and are reused. Some maps display the boundaries of traps. Basically locations in which players will be killed if they stand wile the corresponding trap is activated. Most traps work off the principal of avoiding an area at the correct time, however some are also 100% luck based and some simply require players to die to proceed. Lastly most traps in Deathrun maps are one-time use only.

In Deathrun a lot of time can be spent waiting for the best moment to run through a trap. In the event that no progress is being made in a map, depending on the map, there are precautions in place. For example on some maps eventually a hazard will spawn at the start of the map and makes its way slowly towards the end, killing players on its way. Another map might have a gate that must be passed before a certain time elapses; otherwise everyone who misses the opportunity gets killed. These mechanic exists to not have excessively long rounds. Since normally the majority of players on a server are dead, it’s ideal to have rounds not take too long. Many maps also have precautions to prevent rushing.

Numerous Deathrun servers disable the use of primary and secondary weapons. Some also disable the scout’s double jump as the extra jump can be used to avoid some traps and duke the activator into activating traps early.

And that’s basically Deathrun in a nutshell. A game mode about mastering the art of baiting people into activating traps. Also known as...

good, but I see a ton of grammer/spelling errors in the written section, such as "patients" I believe should be "patience"
