Where in the World are the Animals?! Animals by Biome & Continent *UPDATED through Wetlands Animal Pack
Vytvořil: EdenStarGazer
A comprehensive listing of which animals fit in each biome and continent.
This info is in the Zoopedia, but rather than searching through all the animals for the best ones for your zoo, here is a simple list format to guide your choices. It also may be helpful in choosing which maps might be to your liking for theme zoos.

Update: June 4, 2022
Added Wetlands Animal Pack animals.

African Aquatic

Cleopatra (Cleo the Pygmy Hippo) smiling for her adoring public. *Deluxe Upgrade DLC

The aquatic animals live more in the water than out. Therefore they are often classified separately since they need as much land as water in the zoo.

Animals:
African Penguin *Africa Upgrade DLC
Greater Flamingo
Hippopotamus
Nile Lechwe *Wetlands Animal Pack
Pygmy Hippo *Deluxe Upgrade DLC

Exhibits:
Goliath Frog
African Desert

Personally, I think the African Wild Dogs are way cooler than the Hyenas, but the guests don't agree.

Everyone has heard of the Sahara, or the Zahara Desert that covers most of Northern Africa. It is like a vast ocean of sand... where the water has dried out. And, on its shores is the Sahel, a belted region that holds slightly more water than the desert, and is basically dry shrubland. But, there is also the Libyan desert on the Northern coast, and the Kalahari and Namib deserts in South Africa. I don't expect many animals to be added to the game's desert biomes, since few can live there.

Animals:
African Elephant
African Penguin *Africa Upgrade DLC
African Wild Dog
Cheetah
Common Ostrich
Fennec Fox *Africa Upgrade DLC
Gemsbok
Meerkat *Africa Upgrade DLC
Springbok

Exhibits:
Sacred Scarab Beetle *Africa Upgrade DLC
African Grasslands

Ostriches are extremely easy to raise in game. Springboks, and Gemsboks also make good starter Franchise animals. In this shot I built adobe barriers to contain my Gemsboks and Springboks in my 2nd Franchise Zoo, simply to save effort and money from keeping the walls repaired to concentrate on selective breeding and my first ride. it's a great way to go when you're new to the game, before you have much research, and when you need the practice with the terraforming tools.

Grassland animals are those found in the Savannahs of central Africa and the Veldts of South Africa.

Animals:
Aardvark
African Buffalo
African Elephant
African Wild Dog
Black Wildebeest
Cheetah
Common Ostrich
Common Warthog
Greater Flamingo

African Temperate

The Greater Life: A Greater Flamingo

You will mostly find that the only real temperate zones of Africa are in South Africa, including Namibia and Botswana. They could more correctly be called semi-tropical.

Animals:
Greater Flamingo
African Tropical
Albino Giraffes are an exotic addition. Reticulated Giraffes at Sundown

Tropical regions center mostly around the tropic equatorial regions of the Earth. They are called Rainforests because trees and many other plants are plentiful in the heavy rainfall these areas receive yearly. This is reflected in the vast diversity of wildlife found there, and in the game. Try comparing the Reticulated Giraffe to the Greater Flamingo. Then compare the Giraffe to the Hippo. That provides an idea of the diversity of life that breeds in the tropics. Africa's rainforests are predominantly in the Congo River Basin in western Africa.

Animals:
Aardvark
African Buffalo
Aldabra Giant Tortoise

Asian Aquatic
The Aquatic animals do very well in just about any biome, as long as you provide plenty of water zone.

Animals:
Gharial
Greater Flamingo
Malayan Tapir *Southeast Asia DLC
Nile Lechwe *Wetlands Animal Pack
Proboscis Monkey *Southeast Asia DLC
Red-Crowned Crane *Wetlands Animal Pack
Saltwater Crocodile
Wild Water Buffalo *Wetlands Animal Pack
Asian Desert

It's always 'Hump Day' in the desert.

Asia has a large expanse of deserts. The Gobi is quite large. The Arabian Desert is equally impressive. But, the Rub' al-Khali is the stuff of legends, and there are also the Kyzylkum, the Takla Makan, the Thar in India, the Negev Desert, the Lut, and the Karakum Desert in Asia. Needless to say, the few animals that live here have found remarkable ways to survive and adapt to such extreme conditions.

Animals:
Bactrian Camel

Exhibits:
Sacred Scarab Beetle *Africa Upgrade DLC
Asian Grasslands

Sundown Repose: The Lord of Zoorasia Yokohama. The snow below is Kirill's playground, but the cherry blossoms are his bed overhead.

The Asian Steppes are a wide belt of grasslands that separate the more frigid cold Northern regions from the warmer area to the South.

Asian Taiga

This Macaque Father and offspring are escape artists. Mamma is on the roof with them. Definitely one of my most escape prone species.

The Taiga sweeps across Russia and into northeastern China and Mongolia. It is characterized by vast Wintry forests of spruce trees, pines, and larches.

Animals:
Arctic Fox *North America DLC
Dhole (Ussuri) *Southeast Asia DLC

Asian Temperate

My female Red Panda was expecting when the male died of old age. I caught her climbing the trees to get to the top of the climb proof wall.

The temperate zones of Asia lie above the tropics, and include Japan, Korea, Mongolia, much of China, Russia, and the Tibetan Plateau.

Asian Tropical

Abiona is laughing because I couldn't see the baby elephant in the room. Was I blind or was it a dev joke?

Much of Southeast Asia is covered in rainforests. This area, like Australia, gifts us with many exotic animals that we can find nowhere else in the world, due to the geography.

Animals:
Asian Small-Clawed Otter *Wetlands Animal Pack
Babirusa *Southeast Asia DLC

Asian Tundra

Timberwolves Pair: Rea (l) and Noah (r)

Alpine Tundra differs from Polar Tundra because it has more rainfall/ precipitation. But, the animals still migrate to the Tundra only during the Summer months. Northern Asia's Tundra is in the polar regions of Russia mostly. There is Alpine Tundra on the Tibetan Plateau and the Himalayas.

Animals:
Arctic Fox *North America DLC
Eurasian Lynx *Europe DLC
Himalayan Brown Bear
Moose *North America DLC
Red-Crowned Crane *Wetlands Animal Pack
Reindeer *Arctic DLC
Timber Wolf

European Aquatic

"You can stand under my umbrella": We need signs that say "Please, do not hug the Flamingos."

The Flamingo is quite a mystifying avian creature. I find it gets along well with every animal with which I enclose it... even the Hippo.

Animals:
Greater Flamingo
Polar Bear

Exhibits:
Danube Crested Newt *Wetlands Animal Pack
European Desert
Animals:

Exhibits:
Sacred Scarab Beetle *Africa Upgrade DLC
European Grasslands
Europe's Grasslands are quite diverse. The steppes and mesic grasslands act as the European extension of the Asian steppes, though they are a bit fragmented throughout the region around Germany and France. The meadows to the North in the UK and in areas of Scandinavia are more humid. The more arid regions of Southern Spain's grasslands are almost like deserts.

Animals:
Eurasian Lynx *Europe DLC
European Badger *Europe DLC
European Fallow Deer *Europe DLC
Greater Flamingo
European Taiga

Predation is totally in the game! You know you want to see what happens when you put a Timber Wolf in the pen with a Dall Sheep. Go ahead. Nobody's judging you. It's the Circle of Life. *Arctic DLC

The Taiga covers most of Finland, Sweden, and Norway. Perhaps the Timber Wolf survives because man does not enjoy going out in the cold Taiga to wrest the forests from him. He manages quite well in most of the Northern hemisphere, and especially in the Boreal forests of the Taiga.

Animals:
Arctic Fox *North America DLC
Alpine Ibex *Europe DLC
Eurasian Lynx *Europe DLC
European Badger *Europe DLC
Moose *North America DLC
Reindeer *Arctic DLC

European Temperate
Most of the world's people live in the Temperate Zone. No surprises there. The rest is fun to visit, but I think we can all agree that moderate seasonal fluctuations in the climate suit humans best. The animals have adapted to life everywhere it seems. But, humans are more choosy. Every European country lies in the Temperate Zone. Notice that the Mediterranean areas have their own balmy climate, but it is still largely seasonal and impressively comfortable... or so I've heard.

Animals:
Eurasian Lynx *Europe DLC
European Badger *Europe DLC
European Fallow Deer *Europe DLC
Greater Flamingo
Moose *North America DLC
Timber Wolf

Exhibits:
Fire Salamander *Europe DLC
Danube Crested Newt *Wetlands Animal Pack
European Tropical
No, we never think of jungles in Europe. But, they are sparse in places like southern norway and northern Spain. Of course these are temperate rainforests since they are not near the tropics.

Animals:
Greater Flamingo
European Tundra

No matter how cold your biome is, make sure the faculty areas are warmed. The faculty has to put up with enough 'mess' without freezing. Nice Kitty: This Guard walked on by. My 1st lioness was infertile & ignored by the Heman Lion. So she took a cheerful jaunt down Faculty Street.

Europe's Alpine Tundra is found in the rocky Scottish Highlands, the Pyrenees that separate France from Spain, the Alps (in Austria, Germany, and Switzerland,) the Caucasus Mountains in European Russia, and the Carpathian Mountains (Czechia, Austria, and Serbia.)

Animals:
Arctic Fox *North America DLC
Eurasian Lynx *Europe DLC
Moose *North America DLC
Polar Bear *Arctic DLC
Reindeer *Arctic DLC
Timber Wolf
North American Aquatic
This biome has had new animals added by recent DLC packs. There is much fun to be had with both the Arctic and Aquatic packs in Planet Zoo.

Animals:
American Alligator *North America DLC
California Sea Lion *North America DLC
Gray Seal *Aquatic DLC
North American Beaver *North America DLC
Polar Bear *Arctic DLC

Exhibits:
American Bullfrog *North America DLC
Diamondback Terrapin *Aquatic DLC
North American Desert
To address the elephant in the room, I will mention the hu-man, (as Quark would say in Star Trek Deep Space Nine.) Humans wander through the desert and often do not wander out. The desert is inhospitable... which means it is not a friendly place for us or the wildlife.
In The Waste Land, T. S. Eliot said, "I will show you fear in a handful of dust." (Quoted in the Uncharted games in the surreal desert scene.) There is not much to eat or drink in the desert. Thus, we are only now introducing some animals into the Desert because they are so few. But, here we are with the Europe and North America DLC packs.

Animals:
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog *North America DLC
Cougar *North America DLC

Exhibits:
Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion
Gila Monster
Mexican Red Knee Tarantula
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake

North American Grasslands

American Bison do just fine sharing space with African Buffalo.

Where tropical grasslands are near the equator and hot all year, the North American Grasslands are temperate. Not only are they hot in the Summer and cold in the Winter, but they vary in the types of grass they have as well. If you think of it as an East to West warming; then you can picture the tall lush grasses of the Eastern mid-west prairies, the mixed grasses of the central mid-west, and the short dry grass of the western mid-west area.

Animals:
American Bison
Black-Tailed Prairie Dog *North America DLC
Cougar *North America DLC
Giant Anteater
Jaguar
North American Beaver *North America DLC
Pronghorn Antelope

Exhibits:
Green Iguana
Western Diamondback Rattlesnake
North American Taiga
The Taiga covers most of Alaska, inland Canada, and the northern edges of the USA. It is so cold in the Northern US that most people actually drive in the snow. Many of us here do not drive in the snow. We just buy milk and bread when snow is predicted. I do not know why that is done. But, people around here empty the bread and milk aisles in the grocery stores at the first sign of snow. I guess it is for milk sandwiches. Personally, I prefer pb&j sandwiches. But, the Grizzly Bear does not worry about the snow. He has a nice fur coat to keep him warm, and he just hibernates when it gets too cold.

North American Temperate

Mother/ Daughter Swimming Lessons: "Come on in, the waters fine!"

Much of North and Central America is Temperate. I live in the Deep South in the USA. We get warm Summer days, and plenty of Spring flowers. Often our Winter nights are snowy and the wet leaves plaster everything in the Fall (like at this very moment.) The animals are very comfortable here and have no idea how to survive harsh weather, I am sure. People bring their outdoor pets in on hot or cold nights. The biggest hazard the animals face here is traffic in the suburbs and cities.

I live in an extremely rural (temperate forest) area and I feed the wild Whitetail deer in the cold months, and the birds year-round. The Red Foxes live all around and I see their tails swishing by all the time. I am waiting for Frontier to bring Red Foxes into the game. I would also like to have fish exhibits (aquariums.) I am very pleased with all the different deer species I see in the game. It is great seeing how they differ in each biome. Needless to say, I love Planet Zoo.

Animals:
American Alligator *North America DLC
California Sea Lion *North America DLC
Cougar *North America DLC
Gray Seal *Aquatic DLC
Grizzly Bear

North American Tropical
The Pacific coast of North America has temperate rainforests stretching from Oregon to Alaska. It covers only about a 1200 mile strip, but is somewhat surprising considering the rest of the country. Of course, Mexico is covered with rainforests, as is much of Central America.

Animals:
Cougar *North America DLC
Giant Anteater
Jaguar *South America DLC
Colombian White-faced Capuchin Monkey *South America DLC
(Note: The game considers Central America to be part of North America for most purposes. So, though this animal is part of the South America pack... it is suitable for North America too, since it also lives in Panama.)

Exhibits:
Green Iguana
Lesser Antillean Iguana
Mexican Red Knee Tarantula
Red-Eyed Tree Frog *South America DLC

North American Tundra

- In an attempt to crossbreed, I placed a Male Timberwolf with a Female Arctic Wolf. She was belligerent and aggressive. He sued for peace and then killed her in revenge for the slashes. To clarify, crossbreeding is not a thing in Planet Zoo. Maybe one day.

The polar areas of Canada and Alaska which border on the polar seas are in the Tundra Biome.
Scientists used to argue over what was above that frozen water bordering North America and Europe. Many believed there was a warm inland sea at the North Pole... if you could just get through the ice. True story. Of course they were wrong.

Oceanic Aquatic

"That's Mr. Saltwater Crocodile to you, and anyone watching overhead."

What a nice mix... oceanic and water creatures. But, where is the ocean on our Oceanic map? IDK. Probably in the same place the Oceania Tundra is not. We now have seals and penguins in the game... no walruses yet. Apparently, zoos even raise penguins.

Michael Harvey was asked to remove the 6 young Adders from this Exhibit, but only sees 7 counting Mom (bottom right) & Dad (top).

There are now animals in Planet Zoo's Oceania. Australia has the Rangelands... arid grasslands. All grasslands are basically places where there is too little rain for trees to grow in great numbers. Yet, they are wet enough to escape becoming deserts.

South American Desert
You might see a cougar if you're stumbling through the Atacama Desert in Chile, South America. You are sure to see them in game now. Maybe we will get more South American Desert animals to keep him company: like the South American Gray Fox, or Darwin's Leaf-Eared Mouse. Either way, the cougar has a short food chain.

Animals:

Cougar *North America DLC

South American Grasslands
Grasslands are on every continent, though they vary in amounts of water they hold. They cover a quarter of the Earth. South America's grasslands are the Pampas, Llanos, and Cerrados. When horses were brought over by the first Europeans, they quickly multiplied across the lush grasslands, outrunning the Europeans themselves in 'discovering' the new world.

South American Tundra

Yotimo Polar Bear in the Back Ground is searching for a mate after the Polar Ice melt in my huge polar ice station. But, Yolo Grizzly here in the foreground said she wouldn't have him if he was the last bear on Earth. "He's just not my 'type,' she said. I suppose we will need Elon Musk's Mars Terraforming equipment to restore the Ice Caps here... no, wait... he can probably only blow ice caps up. Never mind that idea.

Welcome to the lonely Penguin! I am afraid to build a new Tundra Zoo, because of the polar ice melt. And, that would break my heart, for the Penguin's sake. No, the best option is to go with Taiga and produce snow artificially for his enclosure. Global Warming ends all the fun in the Tundra, basically creating a game over.

Animals:
King Penguin *Aquatic DLC

Conclusion
This info may be helpful, considering that the game takes heavy account of using the continent and biome of origin to factor in welfare stats. Of course, it is fun and challenging placing animals on foreign continents, but if you want a thematic build this should make it easier to focus on compatible animals. Of course, this will also allow you to focus on boosting your welfare stats from the start.

Either way... have fun with your Planet Zoo!

Notes:
*Many animals appear in multiple categories.
*I made separate sections even in cases of only one animal for a biome. I am sure Frontier will add more animals in the future.
*I added the Exhibit animals for thrills, but they are fine on any map and the welfare stats do not work the same way for them.
*In the future I may update this with more relevant info and photos. If I've made any mistakes or omissions, please comment and I will fix it.

I (kind of) want crossbreeding in Planet Zoo aswell
