Papal States are a faction...yes...really...
Playng as the Pope
Ever wanted to play as the pope in a warring medieval europe? now you can! thanks to PedoBear Industries Inc's lastest idea. a method for playing as the pope in Mevieval Total War 2. Enough blood and faith to make the most pious man interested in his holiness.

This guide is for people who have unlocked the Papal States by modding. If you haven't, but want to, then follow these very simple steps:

1) Open up the descr_strat.txt (usually in Medieval 2/data/world/maps/campaign/imperial_campaign)
2) Move the Papal States from 'non-playable' to 'playable'
3) Save and exit

our little secret ok? this also works on the majority of other factions. feel free to unlock them as well if you haven't already done so through gameplay.

A new Pope ALWAYS comes with Ornamental Armour(-1 Hit points), thanks to him being a priest before he became Pope and thus having a command score of 0. So be careful with him if you use him in combat-he'll be weaker than his bodyguard(who have 2 by default).

Seems the Papal States don't trigger the unlocking of destroyed factions. Then again, you can unlock them all by the same way you unlocked this lot. You may want to mod a little further and change their victory conditions. They are required to take every territory on the map by default. Or you can treat it as a challenge...

Papal Army..The Hand Of God.

Papal Gameplay
The Papal States is a very interesting faction. You can excommunicate other catholic factions by will, control the famous inquisitors, and of course, control the Pope himself.
Your first focus will certainly be to conquer all of Italy. Your first step should always be Florence, which you've got enough starting troops to take. Secondly, taking the island castles of Ajaccio and Cagliari before Sicily/Milan is always an asset.
Your first enemy depends on your own actions. Though Sicily has the best position for an expansion, Milan will most likely go to war against you by besieging Florence and/or Ajaccio, so those guys can be good to take out before they take out you.

Alliance opportunities:
The best alliance partners for the Papal States will most certainly be Catholic factions, and preferably France, Spain/Portugal and Hungary/Poland. Try to avoid alliances with Milan and Sicily, but Venice can be an opportunity.

Enemies:
As mentioned above, yours first enemy will probably be either Milan or Sicily. After that you should attack the Moors, or even the Egyptians, to "unite" Christendom for your cause

Military:
Military focus: How to build a stack with the Papal States:
A papal army in medieval 2 can consist of many things, but your main focus will be heavy infantry (Swiss Guard, Dismounted Feudal Knights, Dismounted Broken Lances) and crossbowmen (preferably Pavise Crossbowmen). Those two should make the most of your stack, but it is always wise to also bring a few spearmen units (preferably Papal Guard) and cavalry (Broken Lances, Men at Arms).
Papal Guard are trained from Stone Walls and Large Stone Walls rather than from any building. As such, castles mean little to the Papal States except possibly as a leg up to those city levels with stone walls or for training heavy warships later. One could say Cavalry, to which I note General's Bodyguard.
Swiss Guard are trained from Huge Stone Walls(Broken Lances also may be trained from Huge Stone Walls...for some reason). They REPLACE Papal Guard outright. As Papal Guard are such powerful infantry by default, there is a choice; Stay at Papal, or go for Swiss? Swiss trade their shield score for a longer range(in terms of melee), heavier anti-cavalry power, and the Armour-Pierce trait.

Strengths:
-Very good heavy infantry (Swiss and Papal Guard, two special units)
-Good crossbowmen (Pavise crossbowmen)
-Good heavy cavalry
Weaknesses:
-Absolute lack of good archers (only Peasant Archers)
-Not very good early infantry and cavalry

Others:
Strenghts:
-Controls the Inquisitors
-Everyone you go to war with, are automatically excommunicated
Weaknesses:
-You can't call a crusade without another faction requesting it
-No princesses (and that makes Fireright angry)
-You can get destroyed if every single Catholic priest dies (but you can avoid it by recruiting priests of your own)

Notes:
On reconciliations: Since everyone Christian you go to war with gets excommunicated, you can offer reconciliation in peace-outs vs Christian factions. This means you can generally ask for more in negotiations. Never just accept their ceasefires, and never just go for peace. See what reconciliation can get you in addition, since peace will give them reconciliation anyway.
On Inquisitors: You won't be notified if they show up. Check your agents tab regularly. They're also only allowed a few kills. After these, their Piety is auto-set to zero, which destroys them.

Calling a Crusade as the big P.
METHOD 1
Another perk to playing as the pope you can call a crusade...if you go to this location

data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign folder

and find a file called Campaign_script.txt

Now add the following event code into the script file. i added this entry at the end of descr_faction_standing.txt:

monitor_event FactionTurnStart FactionIsLocal
set_faction_standing papal_states papal_states 1.0
end_monitor

METHOD 2
alternatively you could tryadding this entry at the end of descr_faction_standing.txt:

Code:
;------------------------------------------
Trigger 0110_Pope_Call_Crusade
WhenToTest FactionTurnStart
Condition TargetFactionType papal_states
FactionStanding factions { papal_states } normalise 1.00
with that i seem to be able to call crusade at will.

METHOD 3
if that doesn't work go to: data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and edit your file campaign_script.txt
and at the bottom above this:

; keep script unfinised until last monitor termination
wait_monitors

end_script

put this code line:

;papal_states
monitor_event FactionTurnStart FactionIsLocal
set_faction_standing papal_states papal_states 1.0
end_monitor

Congratulations, your now a walking righteous powerhouse who can summon the world with one push of a button (hopefully). All fear the pope. even the pope. but not batman, because am ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ batman that's why.
