How to play
Basics
  • Virtual reality headset with motion controllers required to play.
  • If you need to recenter your view, press and hold B or Y button on your Touch controller (or trackpad right on your SteamVR controller) for 2 seconds. For ideal beat hitting make sure you are standing right on green feet symbol under you.

Menu
  • Point your motion controller's laser beam on selection/button you want to activate and press trigger.
  • Navigate to previous menu by clicking on "<" button.

Game
  • Move your hands to destroy incoming balls (perform boxing moves with your fists in fitness mode or slash with selected weapon in free style mode (for phasers use trigger to shoot)).
  • Press B or Y on your Touch controller (or trackpad right on your SteamVR controller) to pause the game.

Party play/Streaming...
  • Press right thumbstick (or trackpad) to activate drawing on the screen (useful when you want to show something to others).
  • Keyboard and mouse can be used to activate and manipulate 3rd person camera and effects in desktop window (headset view is not affected). Press Escape to display the help screen with all controls.
Game modes
Gameplay
  • Balls are symbol and color-coded, you need to destroy the ball with correct hand (yellow balls – left hand, purple balls – right hand).
  • Use maximum precision and maximum speed to achieve best score (precision and speed are also multiplied by boost bonus = flawless hits in a row). If you want to check your performance, go to Settings/Game and set "Show score per hit" to ON. You will then be able to see individual score for each hit (like on the picture above, left hand (yellow) was almost resting, right hand (purple) was performing strong punch).
  • If you miss the ball or hit it with the wrong hand, you lose boost bonus and some amount of your life (see green life line in front of your feet). You can regain life slowly if you hit balls correctly. When your life reaches zero, you fail the whole level and need to start over.
  • You can see percentage of theoretical best score under your song score and in leaderboards. The game knows what the maximum for each song is (based on number of balls and flawless boost bonus multiplied by best precision and strength), so you always know whether it's humanly possible to outdo yourself. :)
The song on the picture was completed with perfect boost bonus (all balls hit, no miss or fail, 100% beats) and with quite strong and precise punches (91% of maximum score)

Difficulty levels
  • There are up to 5 difficulty levels for each song (not every song has to offer all of them): gentle, light, normal, intense, impossibru
  • Gentle, light and normal difficulties all use target hitting space of approximately 60×60 centimeters.
  • Intense difficulty uses hitting space of approximately 90×90 centimeters.
  • Impossibru difficulty uses hitting space of approximately 120×120 centimeters (you might need to crouch and jump sometimes to reach consecutive balls... or choose some long weapon in free style mode)

Fit boxing
  • Perform boxing moves with your hands.

Free style
  • Slash/fire weapon of your choice (use triggers to shoot phasers).

Letter hunter
  • Watch text displayed in front of you and try to hit only the right letters to fill it.
  • You need to avoid all other letters than the one required at the moment.
Level editor
Level editor is located in game's folder (so typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Song Beater\Song Beater Editor). Double-click on "Song Beater Editor.exe" to start it.

Help on using the editor can be displayed by clicking on "Additional info and tools..." button.

Tips
Player's name, Friends, avatars
Names and avatar pictures are loaded automatically from Steam accounts. If you want or need* to change player's/friend's name in the game and leaderboards, you can do it Settings:
*(for example if your nick uses unsupported characters which wouldn't be otherwise shown in leaderboards)

Click on displayed name to change it (on screen keyboard will appear).

If you want to change your avatar picture, go to game data folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Song Beater\Song Beater_Data\Avatars). Here you should see 5 png pictures (they are created automatically after starting the game for the first time) of your party avatars.

Yes, exactly, the currently highlighted letter and also several others right after it (the game tries to help you achieve good score so it generates a queue of 3-4 suitable letters so that you don't need to wait too long) :)

Thank you! When you say 'only the right letters' do you mean the currently highlighted letter?

@twitch.tv/theshyla : Custom songs need to be copied to "CustomSongs" folder in Song Beater folder (typically C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Song Beater\CustomSongs ). If you get existing song from community in Song Beater or ModSaber format (song folder with info.json or info.dat file in it) you just simply copy it there and start the game, it will be imported automatically, no editing necessary. If you are creating your own song from scratch in editor, copy your song folder to "CustomSongs" after you finish. Let us know if it helps, tutorial on creating custom songs coming soon! 🙂

@DJ Gelo Official: Song Beater can import custom songs in original ModSaber format (info.json) as well as in newer format (info.dat). There are many community webs for custom songs, you should be able to search for them with no problem. :)
