Mapping your controller correctly
By forest fire
How to make your controller work in Mercenary Kings (or any Steam game) without using third party xinput emulators (like x360ce) and editing \Configs\USB Joystick.cfg file.

Introduction
i would assume it works with ANY controller. suggested by the dev, i suppose it will be easier to see and use in guide form.
Steps necessary
1. run Steam's Big Picture (View > Big Picture Mode).

2. click Settings (top-right corner).

3. select Controller, then Edit.

4. press all corresponding buttons on your controller (note: i don't have a "Home" button on both of my gamepads, so i after i mapped "Start", i clicked "Select" one twice, and left "Home" unbound).

be sure to click your left and right analogs when instructed, not turn them in a direction.

5. map all your controllers this way, exit Big Picture mode.
Controller mapping explanation
Primary Action - button A.
Go back - button B.
Tertiary Action - button Y.
Secondary Action - button X.
Start - Start.
Guide - button "Home" on XBOX controller, my controller doesn't have this one.
Back - Select.
Left Stick click - press left analog.
Right Stick click - press right analog.
Left Shoulder - left bumper.
Right Shoulder - right bumper.
DPAD - self explanatory.
Left Stick X - push left analog left or right.
Left Stick Y - push left analog up or down.
Right Stick X - push right analog left or right.
Right Stick Y - push right analog up or down.
Left Trigger - left trigger.
Right Trigger - right trigger.
Done
voila, you're done. after this both my controllers work fine. yours should do too.

Configurating in big picture works just fine. Mercenary Kins still dont accept my controller.
There isn´t even an option for controller in game. It just says keyboard mapping....
Am i doing it wrong?

AFAIK there are no mode buttons or anything similar for this. It was plug and play with no drivers included, and it works normally with emulators and similar things.

What is odd is when I was doing the initial button assigning, the dpad acted like you would expect. The problem came about after the initial assigning, when steam would not let me save the setup, saying it required analog inputs to be assigned. THAT is when it made the dpad begin to assign as "axis 1" and "axis 0" instead.

is there anything like a "mode" control on your controller, @WildBastion? is there a special driver you use for some additional functions? it just might be that Steam only overrides the non-unique controller settings, aka bootleg PS2 controllers and the likes, so you could try temporarily removing the vendor drivers and using generic Windows ones, although i am not sure and i had no luck in finding answers when i personally ran into this problem and was looking for an answer.

it's a shame game simply didn't provide working controller remapping options.this is frankly the first game i needed to use this bizarre solution with.

I'm in the same boat as BananaJane: Dpad considered to be analog stick instead of dpad. it only maps up and left, instead of an actual axis so it doesnt have the other direction.

I just want to use my logitech precision while i wait to buy a new 360 controller, i played my old one to death.

Sadly my controls for the precision are always shifted clockwise one key. =<

Welp, if anyone knows how to help it would be great, or even if there is a way to delete the settings that are now had for this logitech to try again...

Doesn't work with my PS3 gamepad... I really though that this time I would use it instead of my Xbox 360 gamepad...

the thing is, i didn't have to! i just configured my controller in the Big Picture mode and it worked outside of it then perfectly. seems at least one or two other people who followed the guide also got it working. what kind of controller do you use?
