Artillery Uses, Types, and Value
By troublmaker
Despite all artillery being used for the same macro function of providing area of effect damage the actual individual uses of different types of artillery vary.

In this guide you will encover the three basic types of artillery, that is rocket, mortar, and standard artillery types. This will explain clearly how each one is used and how you ought to use each other. These artillery types are only powerful against certain sets of units but more importantly are only powerful at certain times in the game.

USES OF ARTILLERY
Artillery have two purposes.

The first is to deal area of effect damage. For this purpose artillery gain a late game advantage because there are more units to splash with damage.

The second use of artillery is morale damage.

Morale is this little stat you have probably noticed on your units that informs you of how much or how little they are keeping their “cool.” Once a unit completely panics he will “Rout” or “Retreat” in a random direction.

In a late game setting a unit that “routs” will immediately get blasted by the front line.
TYPES OF ARTILLERY
Artillery can be broken down into three sub-types.

The first is your standard artillery. It has long range, has medium cost effectiveness, and a medium sized spray. This is most often used for killing infantry.

The second type is mortar type. These are short range, high cost effectiveness, and small sized spray. This is most often used for morale damage.

The third type is rocket type. These are short range, low cost effectiveness, and large spray. These are most often used for end game killing grouped units.

Mortar and standard artillery are most cost effective rallied out early because of their cost efficiency.

Rocket types however are only cost effective later in game because of how much it costs to fire them.

Let’s look at the Buratino and its cost.
USING ARTILLERY
With mortar and standard types you will want to have them firing more often. Since they only strengthen tanks they should never be aimed against tanks.

Mortars and artillery should only be used when a rocket based weapon is available to destroy a routing unit.

Rocket based artillery does insanely high damage. However if the number of units in the area is too small you lose a lot of supply cost.

If you are winning you should spend the last 5 minutes of the game doing nothing but non-stop artillery barrage on select areas.

If you are losing you should try and prepare for an attack with artillery supporting for extra morale damage.

Rocket Artillery is actually horrid at killing things. It may have those high HE values listed, but the rockets are so spread out that it's very hard to actually make a kill. Your only kills will be random infantry in the open and unarmored jeeps. Rocket arty is meant to mass panic large areas, and it does that well.

The Burrito is an exception. It's what you use to wipe towns off the map.

I understand, but its rare to have a standoff where an army can cover such an area that makes rockets do enough dmg to surpass what a barrage arty can do. If you are at a standpoint where potentially 50+ units are in a clump, then by all means rocket the hell out of them.

IMHO barrage still would do a heck of a lotta dmg here. Just my 2 cents

I think we're thinking about damage in different ways here. You are thinking "I want to kill one unit, which will do most damage." In that case it ends up being mortars because of their high cost effectiveness, great rate of fire and small area. They're best used early game specifically because they pay so well for cost.

Let's get some stats down:
MALKA: 14 HE
AML 60: 6 HE
SMECH: 16 HE

Their damage is highest however doesn't have to do with HE values but potential damage per second. In the last 10 minutes in a battle in which neither side has pushed the battle field is VERY saturated. The highest DPS artillery unit is going to be the one that fires off the most armaments in the largest area.

In my latest replay video Enohka and Random actually use this rocket based artillery to finish off their opponents:

Eh, you are kinda wrong at quite a few points. First, standard artillery can also be broken into Tube arty (your sniping ones) which are high cost high acuracy very low rounds per min. and standard arty which has a fire rate inbetween mortars and tubes.

Secondly, rockets do no damage whatsoever as their aoe is very weak. Short of a enemy where you cant see the ground under his army, you wont get a direct shot. They are extreamly low damage but their morale dmg is insane. Ive seen burannos (napalm and rocket combination) instantly route an army of abrihams.

If you want your arty to do dmg, you get wither tube or mortar. These will hit. Standard arty main use is smoke cover (which you also forgot to cover) and rocket and standard arty best against morale.

One last thing, if you are new, dont bother with rocket. It drains your supplies imensely and doesnt help much.
