Historical scenario

By July 1944 many attempts have been made by the Allies to break through the German lines in Normandy. None of them had the planned results. Caen had been extensively bombed and during Operation Charnwood the north side of the city has been seized by the Allies. Across the Orne the German units dug in and a further Allied advance was not pursued.

The planning of the follow up operations began on 14th July. Operation Goodwood on the far eastern flank would see three British Armoured Divisions cross the Orne river at Pegasus Bridge and swoop to the south, forcing a breakthrough. The tanks would only be performing a 'limited attack' instead of a 'deep break-out' going as far as the German held areas between Bourguébus Ridge, Bretteville-sur-Laize and Vimont.

Simultaneously Operation Atlantic would be launched in Caen. Canadian forces would cross the Orne river and capture the rest of the city.

The Germans considered Caen and its surroundings to be a critical point in their defensive strategy. Military intelligence warned the Panzer Group West that a British attack out of the Orne was likely. This prompted the Germans to fortify several villages at the front line and organize their defensive lines by placing anti-tank guns on the southern and eastern edges of Caen. It was decided not to place anti-tank minefields as the German command wanted its tanks to be able to move freely in anticipation of any break-out attempt.

Note:
This is a BIG scenario in terms of unit count. Depending on your system it means that slowdowns might happen while playing it and it will generally play slower than other scenarios with less units.
