Another alternative is another filter like the percent grown filter, but for how distant the plant is from your home base. I think that'd be helpful even without the FPS drop issues.
On the off chance you come back to the comments, would it be possible to add click and drag functionality?
It looks like there are several people below who have noted that it's not possible to click and drag any selections (like you can do in the Wildlife tab/the Schedule tab etc). I believe it's something that can only be added in the assemblies and I have no idea how to read/edit C#.
