Is there any way to get AI using these to get up close to you? Right now they treat them like a normal sidearm and just sit 15m away from you and swing at the air in front of them.

is there no way to make the animations play without having to insert the code? Could you make it a default for the addon? If so it would be by far the best melee weapon addon in Arma 3 History
