While I haven't been able to reproduce, it's useful to know in case others have a similar problem.
Could you please run a dxdiag (windows + R, type "dxdiag" in the Run box, and save all the informations to a text file), and send the result along with the "console.txt" file (if there is one, in the directory where you extracted the game) to the following address : hoc@notbydesign.net

Interestingly, the "dungeon crawler" genre was very popular 20-30 years ago (Dungeon Master, Black Crypt, Anvil of Dawn, etc.), but it seems to be coming back (Legend of Grimrock, as you mentioned, but also Might&Magic Legacy, etc.). We started working on our prototype before these were released or started to communicate, and it was a great pleasure for us to see them succeed as it clearly shows there is still a public for this kind of game !
We hope to provide this public with a game they will enjoy for its differences :D
Dungeon crawlers do necessarily share a certain amount of common elements ; managing a party and inventories, exploring a maze-like environment, using items to solve puzzles, fighting monsters, finding treasures, etc. are all fundamental mechanics that are reasonable to expect from this kind of game.
Nevertheless, there is enough flexibility to allow developers to make radically different core design choices to renew the experience of the player. Our approach to combat and navigation, for example, share very little with Legend of Grimrock ; which is why we are releasing a playable prototype to gather some feedback about the overall experience from the user point of view.
