gmDoom is a partial source port of DOOM for Garry's Mod.

Please do not share download links for commercial WAD files in the comments or discussions. If you are experiencing a problem with the addon, please post in the discussion section instead of the comments. I try to respond to the issues I can, but I don't have enough time to help everyone immediately.


INSTALLATION GUIDE

1. Getting your IWAD...

You must have a DOOM IWAD file in your garrysmod/garrysmod/ folder. gmDoom only needs ONE IWAD, and any extra IWAD files you install will be ignored by gmDoom. If you have installed any of the following games, you can find your IWAD's default location below:

The recommended IWAD file is DOOM2.WAD. If you do not own a DOOM IWAD, you can still use the DOOM shareware[www.doomarchive.com] IWAD or the Freedoom[www.nongnu.org] IWAD. Please consult the IWAD feature chart[i.imgur.com] to see which features your chosen IWAD provides.

2. ...Installing your IWAD to Garry's Mod

Once you have found your IWAD, copy it to your garrysmod/garrysmod/ folder by following these steps:
  1. Open your Steam library.
  2. Right click on 'Garry's Mod' and select 'Properties'.
  3. In the window that pops up, click on the 'LOCAL FILES' tab.
  4. Click on the button labeled 'BROWSE LOCAL FILES...'.
  5. The folder that appears should have another folder inside it named 'garrysmod'. Open it.
  6. Paste your IWAD file into the 'garrysmod' folder you just opened.
  7. Installation complete!

If you decided to skip the above steps and open the garrysmod/garrysmod/ folder yourself, be aware that the path moved on June 5th, 2013. Follow the above steps so you don't use an old path!

FAQ


Q: Why are there pink and black boxes everywhere?!
A: You didn't install a DOOM IWAD, or you have installed it incorrectly. Please refer to the installation guide above.

Q: Some stuff is a black square for a moment! What's wrong?
A: For now, this is normal. Textures are loaded when they are needed, so the first time you spawn something it takes a moment for it to load the textures it needs. They should be fine in a few seconds.

Q: The textures were fine, but something caused them to turn into black squares again! What do I do?
A: The material system has probably reloaded. This usually occurs when you do something like changing your video settings. The textures should begin reloading automatically, so give them some time to finish.

Q: I installed an IWAD file, but gmDoom stopped working after June 5th, 2013. Why? How do I fix this?
June 5th, 2013 was the day of the SteamPipe update for Garry's Mod. There is a good chance this has changed the location of your garrysmod folder, and you may need to reinstall your IWAD. Please revisit the installation guide, which has been updated to account for this change.

Q: Why is my weapon locked up after transitioning to a new level?
A: This is an issue with the save system of Garry's Mod. I'll try to remedy this with a custom save system.

Q: Monsters don't bleed when I shoot them, and the weapons don't have the smoke impact effects. How do I fix this?
A: This is apparently caused if you have installed the M9K weapon packs. Something about it keeps gmDoom's effects from being loaded, so try disabling it for now. I'll look for some way to resolve this conflict.

Q: What is an IWAD?
A: An IWAD is a file containing all of the DOOM assets ( sprites, textures, sounds, music, maps, etc. ).

Q: Why do I have to install a stupid IWAD? Why can't you just include the assets in the addon!?
A: It's not legal for me to redistribute the game assets.

Q: Can this mod run Brutal Doom?
A: Unfortunately, it cannot. Brutal Doom is a mod for ZDoom-based engines, but gmDoom is based on the original Doom engine.

Q: Does this mod have some sort of control panel?
A: Yes! You can open the gmDoom menu with the console command "doom_cl_menu_toggle". From here, you'll be able to set various options, including which keys are used to show the menu and the automap.

Q: How do I enable the DOOM HUD?
A: You can turn the DOOM HUD on and off by using the following commands in the console:
Enable:
doom_cl_hud 1
Disable:
doom_cl_hud 0

Q: How do I view the automap?
A: If you have picked up the Computer Area Map item, you can use the following commands in the console to control the automap:
Enable:
doom_cl_map 1
Disable:
doom_cl_map 0
The automap will not appear if you have not picked up the Computer Area Map item. The first time you turn on the map during a session, it may cause your game to freeze for a short moment while it generates.

Q: I'm Hammer user, and I would like to use gmDoom entities in my map. How do I get started?

Q: How do I open the menu?
A: You can use the command "doom_cl_menu_toggle" in the console.

@zeloscar It is possible to load custom unofficial WADs ‒ such as: tht.wad, doom32.wad, doomjr.wad, ect. ‒, but most of the contents will be loaded from "doom.wad". I mean, only the levels will be loaded from the custom unofficial WAD, monsters and textures will come from "doom.wad", so, there can be problems if a mod use custom textures/models. Not every custom unofficial WAD can be loaded successfully, you can't know that until you try your WAD(s).
Just copy the custom WAD(s) to GarrysMod\garrysmod\ folder, just make sure "doom.wad" is also there before you try to load in something. 😉

I don't understand why some people are shitting on the idea of needing IWADs. Do some basic research and you will realise what are doom source ports and why we have them. Making a version that includes the game data would not only be none faithful but also take away most of it's potential. Besides, Freedoom is a thing if you don't want to spend the price of a big mac for playing something. It's easy to make a a crappy mod that steals assets from doom, but making an actual source port with decent accuracy for the original game inside a another game is pretty insane if you think about it
