Introduction
"The Booster Build" is based on several key concepts:

  • The "Invulerable While Boosting" node
  • Proccing absolutely mental amounts of boost drops
  • Never stop boosting
  • Avoid Laser and Lightning whenever possible

As long as you can maintain boost and kill stuff, you should be capable of generating more than enough boost drops to keep yourself full on boost to keep crashing into everything. This build doesn't require more than 80 nodes to pull off, so if you're still on your first loop, you can do it!

Let's get started on how to build it!
Building it
There are a number of vital components to this build:

  • Having a high amount of Boost (Boost regeneration is not necessary)
    • This is not technically necessary, but higher Boost capacity gives higher stability for if you accidentally pick up Laser or Lightning and your kill rate plummets.
  • Having every single "Get Boost/Boost drop on kill" proc panel you can get
  • Nabbing the "+100% Luck while Boosting" node
  • Getting "+5% to all on-kill procs" node
  • Using a class build that does not penalize Boost and preferably boosts Luck (Gambler)
    • DO NOT get the Absorber class! This class has a tendency to create permanent invincibility in Boost-based builds, which prevents death, which stops you from claiming your score (or SP). While unlikely in this particular variant, at the very least you may find yourself being harder to kill than intended.
  • Using many, many barrage and homing projectile procs
  • "Only Spawn Boost": Hurts more than it helps, we spawn our own boost pickups.

All of these combined lead to a build that can look somewhat like this (example is with 80 max nodes):
Using it
After creating your Booster Build, take it for a test run. Make it rain boost. You are untouchable.

The nice thing about this build is that it doesn't rely on passive damaging (cycler builds) or shield spamming, meaning that at any time you can end your boost and kill yourself to end your run. The amount of weapon upgrades should be sufficient to clear the enemies off your screen so long as you don't accidentally pick up Laser or Lightning, in which case simply wait until either it wears off or you get a new weapon (and if you're on a later loop and could afford "Deal damage while invulnerable", you can keep killing things anyways!).

The downside, of course, is that it'll often fill your screen with booster drops, causing lagspikes, but I was able to get over 2kk no problem.

I hope you've enjoyed this guide!

Hey dude, could you do a video or something on how to mod bytepath, I'd love to mod it but I'm too dumb for the written

There also exists a bug where your Luck can drop exponentially after exiting Boost (which I fixed in the Unofficial Patch mod). The build generally works fine as long as you never exit Boost and still have enough damage to kill things.

However, there is an alternative method for gaining Boost that isn't reliant on killing enemies. You can take the node for converting Health pickups to Boost, then build around Health pickups instead. Built correctly, you'll have far more Health pickups (and Boost) than you'll know what to do with.

Thanks for the guide, this is a really fun build and I managed to get all my missing achievements with it. There is still an element of luck.. I had two runs with the wisp not go so well due to lack of drops but the third one oozed drops so I got my score up fast!

You also have to be very careful with your boost dropping to 0 since for whatever reason (probably a bug) you won't have invulnerability again until your gauge recharges.

Actually, I think I figured it out - the invulnerability conditional seems to just permanently turn off when I switch from using arrow keys to WASD, which is definitely a bug. Thanks for the guide by the way!

Why does "invulnerability while boosting" seem not to work for me? I hold down boost constantly, and I still die from running into the large asteroids that don't break up fast enough. I've tried boosting up or down and I still take damage both ways.
