Angling your tanks Armour in Darkest Hour Real Panzer
Guide to Angling your Tank in Darkest Hour RealPanzer.

Hello this is a guide to angling your tank to make best use of its armour protection.

The first diagram shows 2 tanks at 45 degrees to each other, both turret and hull are at 45degrees or 11 oclock or 1 oclock to each other and therefore optimally angled to maxmise deflection chance and armour thickness. But neither can take a shot as the guns are not pointing in the right position. The amount of angle you need has to be learned as each tank is a little different.

The second diagram shows that the IS2 (upper left tank) has turned away from the Panzer IV (lower right tank) and presented the Panzer IV with a clear unangled shot to the IS2s vulnerable side hull and turret. The Panzer IV has turned its turret to take a shot at the IS2. In this position the IS2 is totally not angled and is vulnerable, the Panzer IV has its hull angled to the IS2 at 11 oclock for maximum deflection chance and to thicken its armour (like slicing a sausage on a slant so that you get a longer slice) the turret however is presenting a flat 12 oclock angle to the IS2 and is very vulnerable in the firing position.

In the third diagram the Panzer IV has taken its shot at the IS2 and returned its turret to the straight 12 o'clock position to reload, the Panzer IV has angled both its turret and hull optimally for maximum deflection chance and armour thickness from the direction of the IS2. The IS2 remains with its unangled side to the Panzer IV and has taken damage and is lucky to have at all survived the first shot from the Panzer IV. Probaby it is at yellow or red damage status indicating that the armour is cracked and the perhaps various battle systems or crew members no longer function.

In the last diagram the Panzer IV has positioned its turret at 12 oclock to the IS2 to take another shot. The shot is successful and the IS2 is knocked out.

The most important thing to remember is to angle you entire tank against the likely direction of return enemy fire. Only present a 12 oclock armour surface to the enemy while briefly taking a shot at the enemy with your gun. At all other times stay angled.

With some tanks the armour is so weak that angling will not help you, for example the Marder IIIN has only 10mm to 20mm armour at its strongest points, if you angle this you can get the equivalent of maybe 45mm of armour that against any Soviet weapon greater than a 45mm cannon will not help you at any range. In this example it is doubtful that the PIV would have survived a return shot from the IS2 even when optimally angled because the armour on the PIV is not great and the IS2 has a very powerful cannon.

Any sort of angled shot attracts a deflection chance bonus and also thicker armour, (like when you slice a sausage on an angle rather than straight through) Perpendicular shots give your shots no chance of deflecting and also you are presented with the thinnest armount of armour protection and a damage bonus upon penetration.

Every tank in the game has weak points, every tank with a turret has a weak point and that is the turret ring, if you can put a well aimed round there it will blow the tank sky high even if your own tank does not have a very powerful gun.

Other weak points are hatches and vision ports where a critical hit on an otherwise thickly amoured surface is possible.

Inside each tank are also vulnerable spots that represent such things as fuel tanks, ammo storage and that sort of thing, IF you penetrate the armour at this point and the shot goes into the tank and hits one of these points your shot does a lot more damage than it normally would as it has the added destructive power of the igniting and exploding fuel or ammo storage as well. The trick is to learn where these points are and aim for them when shooting, this makes one shot kills much more likely, often you only get to have one shot and so you have to make it count.

The tanks in RP are modelled on real tanks so if you can find a cut away drawing of a real tank and locate the fuel tanks and ammo stores then that is where you should be aiming when playing to ensure a one shot kill.

Other weak points that do incremental damage are optics, tracks and the engine area, any hit there has the chance of knocking those things out.

No matter how thickly armoured your tank is its tracks are its main weakpoint, these can be broken by a hit from even the lightest enemy cannon, always try to hide these from enemy view if you can. On the other hand when up against a heavily armoured opponent where you have little or no chance of penetrating his armour, go for track and wheels shots in the hope of immobilising him, then you can either drive around for a perpendicular shot from a better angle or at least you have set him up for your team mates to finish off. An immobilised tank is as good as lost in most cases.

Any hit on any tank has a chance of doing some sort of damage such as a failure of the turret traverse, gun elevation, gun operation, engine out, tracks off etc. So it is a good idea not to get hit at all and always try to attack from an ambush position and so avoid being spotted and shot back at. Tanks are complex, intricate machines that take a lot of care and maintenance to keep running and are easily rendered inoperable with even a little bit of heavy handling. The game models this.

The best protection is not be seen or hit at all, as every hit has the chance of doing some sort of damage to your tank. Use concealed positions and camouflage, take your shot and then relocate.

Alan

DH REAL PANZER OST FRONT SERVER

For all true enthusiasts of WW2 tank combat we have made an expansion to RO/DH to make the tanks as historically accurate and as true to life as possible so that you can experience the true combat capabilties of the steel giants of the second world war.

Through the improvements and extra characteristics a whole new world of tactical possibilities is now open for players to have an exciting and demanding tank battle experience on the eastern front as part of the Russian Red Army or the German Wehrmacht.

Real engine sounds.

Historically correct gun optics, armour and cannon penetration values, vehicle skins.

Vehicles taken from just about all RO and DH mods and expansions.

Vehicles have front, side and rear armour rating for the hull AND turret. The armour thickness is correct and now includes a parameter for the slope of the armour.

Most tanks have at least 3 sorts of ammo, those that do not have special rounds like HEAT or APCR have smoke screen rounds.

Shells have the correct speed, weight and explosive effect. The tank shell tracer can only be seen from back of the shell and does not glow like in all directions like the stock games do.

Ammunition is correctly identified.

Vehicles are accessible to crews of both sides so it is possible to capture and use enemy equipment.

Correct Turret rotation speeds, correct reload times, correct vehicle speeds.

Damage model now includes damage to tracks (they come off and the tank slews in a circle), optics, turret rotation, gun elevation, individual crew member deaths, engine fires.

When you climb out of the tank from the turret you stand on the tank and you have open the hatch to get out.

No more waiting in the spawn for additional crew members.

Smoke launchers (button 4) on some tanks not all.

Grenade launchers (button 5) on some tanks not all.

Infantry can ride on the back engine deck of any tank in the game.

When destroyed, tank turrets and bodies come flying out.

Flamethrower tanks like the the OT34, OTKV85, Flammpanzer Hetzer/PanzerIII.

Unlimited tank and infantry roles on all maps.

Theels fantastic Russian infantry and weapons from the his brilliant Darkest Orchestra work.

Russian and German tank commanders can call artillery strikes.

Player down load package is located above right so that you can install all the files on your pc to save you down loading from server. Simply extract and place in your Darkest Hour folder. As a seperate down load are all our maps, simply down load and place them in the maps folder of your DH installation.

I am afraid that due to lack of players we turned the RP server off. DH went thru a phase of constant and unnecessary mods to the main game that meant that 80% of DH custom maps were lost and we had to keep modding our own mod to keep up with the changes and it got too much and the player numbers steadily dropped off. The info in this guide still applies to DH tho and is still useful.

When is the RP server most active anyway? Friday/weekend nights, American timezones?

Thanks god until today only few players use angling...even when you tell them. They just park their future scrapmetal frontal to your tank and open fire. :P

It would be a big job but I will have a look, maybe just do the main ones that come up all the time like the t34 and Stalin, Tiger, Panther etc.
