As a JRPG fan, I've had Cold Steel sitting in my library waiting for me to pick it up for a while. I decided to finally play it, but I took a quick look at the guides section first because I hate missables. I found you're guide instead, and the last month or so has been a wild ride as I discovered the beauty of Trails in the Sky. Thanks for opening my eyes to this amazing series and long legacy!
I probably will wait on Geofront version before I do a second play though of Azure as it will add in those juicy chest quotes and a better translation, thought the current one is fine.
That said the first option I listed was pretty much how I played thought the series with the exception of playing part of CS 2 before zero but once I looked at Crossbell I responded “Okay seriously what happened in Crossbell!!!!????"
I don't think Zero really spoils anything for CS even though they going on at the same time the events don't affect each other’s story yet plus it closes out the events set in motion in 3rd.
I also hate that last scene in Azure that talks about Crossbell’s future as it spoils the finale of CS 2. I think the order presented manages to avoid most of those spoiler pitfalls. Mind you stopping mid game is not appealing but apparently your FAQ already advocates that already if you’re playing CS 2 and have not played the Crossbell ones.
So after going through a hell of a marathon (picked up CS 1 on sale in July) I’m almost finished with CS 2. I am currently at the Crossbell section. I mostly followed your roadmap. Anyway having finished all the first 6 games I thought I throw in a play order suggestion as well:
Either:
CS > FC > SC > 3RD > Zero > CS 2: Stop after finishing first chapter then viewing Garrelia Fortress > Azure: up though Ch. 4 > CS 2: Ch. 2 but stop before Trista boss fight > Azure: can finish final boss fight but cut after event happens and before it can tell what happens to Crossbell in the future > finish CS2 > CS 3> CS 4
Or
The same but the fifth and sixth option swapped
I'll hope the Azure fan tran comes out before I finish CS1 then
FC > SC > 3RD > ZERO > CS1 > CS2 > AZURE > CS3 > CS4
(Of course if the Azure translation releases before I start CS2 I would play it after CS1 and before CS2)
