WOTC Even More Backstories

In 1 collection by Cato Heresy
Cato's WOTC Gameplay V4 - July 2018
107 items
Did you know the base game has only 9 soldier backstories? This mod changes that. Massively.

Thanks to a huge community effort this mod proudly gives you 505 total new backstories, all with male/female descriptor variants, all carefully edited to stay lore-friendly.

- 312 unique, new XCOM soldier backstories
- 44 unique, new Reaper backstories
- 60 unique, new Skirmisher backstories
- 42 unique, new Templar backstories
- 14 new Engineer & Scientist backstories
- 33 unique, exclusive MOCX backstories

The majority of content is community submissions and stories penned myself - together we have developed some wonderful new additions to the lore of XCOM.

Each story has been individually edited and adapted for consistency. The mod is now well over 100,000 words.

Special Notes / Supported Mods

Birthdates WOTC - Recommended but NOT actually required, my mod comes with a bundled file which uses Grim's mod to set a custom date of birth for each backstory.

Non-Skirmisher ADVENT Hybrids - Custom support adds 60 new hybrid backstories with all Skirmisher references removed.

[WOTC] The MOCX Initiative - Custom support adds 33 MOCX exclusive backstories.

General Compatibility

Incompatible with any mod that targets [X2CharacterTemplate] - which basically means another backstory mod.

Compatible with all XCOM soldier class mods.

Compatible with 'A Better Barracks' by DerBK

This mod has zero effect on any combat events or movement animations. It literally just adds lines to the character template file which is a resource used when spawning new soldiers on the tactical map.

Existing Games:

This mod will only affect newly generated recruits or reward soldiers who show up going forwards. It will not overwrite or update existing soldiers in your roster or recruitment pool. For best effect I recommend a new game.

The actual backstories can be viewed in the Localization folder. Open XcomGame.Int with Notepad.

You can find an old vanilla version of this mod by GamingGeek here: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=626140605

This mod blends and adapts entries from various user submissions and also from ChristopherOdd, Lore Friendly and Unique Soldier's Character Pool. Everyone involved is credited in the ReadMe file.

Final Words

Please kindly take a moment to rate up if you enjoy the mod. It helps the mods visibility on the workshop and generally makes me feel happy about the 50+ hours I've sunk into it. Thank you!

Fantastic mod. Sure it's not the most impactful mod in terms of gameplay but MY GOD if you love lore and flavour and all that stuff then this is a must-have. This plus Birthdates plus Not Created Equal really helps create a sense of a varied and interesting crew. Thanks Cato!

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately I'm confident that I tried all of these suggestions while trying to get my game to run with no luck. Once my current campaign ends I'll try all of the suggested solutions verbatim and hopefully have better results.

Thanks again. Every time I play my current campaign the absence of this mod is painfully noticeable. It's a must have for me.

@Street Justice:
In my last campaign I ran both this mod and "Random Soldier Info Mod" together without problems.

Try what Cato Heresy posted, although I'd recommend re-setting your graphics etc. options and keybindings at step 3.

Installation / Regenerating clean XCOM 2 config files

Whenever you drastically change your mod list, you need to clear your X2 config cache before you start a new campaign.

This process is very important to avoid instability and bugs from old mod config files.

1) Verify the integrity of your XCOM 2 game cache with Steam.

2) Navigate to \Documents\My Games\XCOM2 War of the Chosen\XComGame\Config
Delete all the .ini files within that folder

3) Start-up WOTC with mods DISABLED - this will cleanly regenerate those .ini files.
Quit to desktop at the menu screen.

4) Start-up WOTC with all mods enabled. All done!

Also when was the last time you clean installed XCOM 2 and deleted / regenerated your user .ini config files? This should be done between every campaign.

I have never used that mod myself, although it is likely incompatible if the author makes any changes to the X2CharacterTemplate file.

However I have not had anyone else report this, and from what I gather from the Random Soldier Info mod page is that the mod only interacts with the template (so it should work?) and that the author is aware of some issues crashing games.

Your best bet would be to check in with that author, as that mod is far more complicated then mine. (This is just a huge edit of an existing text file, whereas RSI introduces new UI scripting.)

Love this mod but whenever I have it running with "Random Soldier Info" my game will crash if I try to edit a soldier via character pool or the armoury. Any advice?

She just wanted to watch Netflix. They took that away. She just wanted to play a game online. They took that away. She tried to watch TV. They took that away. and then, they did the one thing that made her snap. They took her smut... She took their lives

This background alone warranted a Like and Favourite. So many glorious background in there.
