Did you know the base game has only 9 soldier backstories? This mod changes that. Massively.

Thanks to a huge community effort this mod proudly gives you 505 total new backstories, all with male/female descriptor variants, all carefully edited to stay lore-friendly.

- 312 unique, new XCOM soldier backstories
- 44 unique, new Reaper backstories
- 60 unique, new Skirmisher backstories
- 42 unique, new Templar backstories
- 14 new Engineer & Scientist backstories
- 33 unique, exclusive MOCX backstories

The majority of content is community submissions and stories penned myself - together we have developed some wonderful new additions to the lore of XCOM.

Each story has been individually edited and adapted for consistency. The mod is now well over 100,000 words.


Special Notes / Supported Mods

Birthdates WOTC - Recommended but NOT actually required, my mod comes with a bundled file which uses Grim's mod to set a custom date of birth for each backstory.

Non-Skirmisher ADVENT Hybrids - Custom support adds 60 new hybrid backstories with all Skirmisher references removed.

[WOTC] The MOCX Initiative - Custom support adds 33 MOCX exclusive backstories.


General Compatibility

Incompatible with any mod that targets [X2CharacterTemplate] - which basically means another backstory mod.

Compatible with all XCOM soldier class mods.

Compatible with 'A Better Barracks' by DerBK

This mod has zero effect on any combat events or movement animations. It literally just adds lines to the character template file which is a resource used when spawning new soldiers on the tactical map.


Existing Games:

This mod will only affect newly generated recruits or reward soldiers who show up going forwards. It will not overwrite or update existing soldiers in your roster or recruitment pool. For best effect I recommend a new game.

This mod blends and adapts entries from various user submissions and also from ChristopherOdd, Lore Friendly and Unique Soldier's Character Pool. Everyone involved is credited in the ReadMe file.

Grims mod page also states that he makes changes to some of the UI code. Do you have anything which mods or extends the Armory UI screen?

@The Hat - Must be a third party mod conflicting with Birthdates in your load order. My mod uses a bonus config file to use Birthdates, but functions completely fine without it.

Would you mind sending me a copy of your load order? It would help me identify what gameplay mod could be causing mischief. I'm thinking it may be something fairly recent or else more people would have reported it to me?

At anyone wondering about the conflict:

The bio fields are blank when you use the birthdates mod recommended above.

It could be caused by a third mod interacting with both of these, but removing the birthdates mod got rid of my problem, and the bios are back.

@Bad_Horse - Yes, Dragon is correct. Simply overwrite the story content you dislike with one which you do like. Make sure you only paste the story content inside the quotation marks, the numbering must remain sequential.

If you delete an entire line/mess up the numbering then everything below that line will no longer work.

AFAIK the index numbers all need to be sequential. I'd say pick one you like and copy & paste it over the one you don't.

If I want to remove specific backstories from popping up in my game (like the Cthulhu-referencing ones, which I'm not a fan of personally), can I just comment them out or delete them from XComGame.int without having to change any of the numbering? If the numbering has to change for the randomizer to work that will be enormously cumbersome.

Or are you running the game in French by chance? This mod uses the international localization file, so possible conflict there.

Never had that reported to me before. This mod adds lines to the vanilla selection... are you using a custom class? Maybe something which is not looking at vanilla correctly?
