Recruits Conserve Character Pool

This mod conserves your Character Pool so that you can continue to receive Pool soldiers as mid- to late-game rewards.

The game's default behavior is to pull five Character Pool soldiers into your Recruit Soldiers list every month. By mid- to late-game most of your Character Pool will be sitting in that list, useless.

To change that behavior, this mod uses an ini change to stop adding soldiers to the Recruit Soldiers list every month. Then it overrides the UIRecruitSoldiers screen so a new soldier gets added to the list only each time you recruit one. This keeps the Recruit Soldiers list at a constant size (by default, 10 soldiers) for the entire game. It ensures that Pool characters are not added to this list when there's no chance you'll ever recruit them.

The length of the Recruit Soldiers list at campaign start can be changed via the StartingNumRecruits value in your XComGameData.ini file. Personally I like to change it to 1 so that I'm forced to take whomever my Pool gives me, rather than letting me pick favorites.

If you start using this mod mid-campaign it won't do as much. It'll curb the growth of your Recruit Soldiers list, but any Pool soldiers in the list are there to stay; it doesn't reduce the existing list. It will, however, help you get the most out of any soldiers you add to your Pool mid-campaign; you should see them as mission rewards rather than seeing them dumped into the Recruit list at month's end.

This mod is built for War of the Chosen, but it should also work if you ignore the launcher warning and use it with the base game.

This mod overrides the UIRecruitSolders class.

There's no harm to disabling this mod. It won't corrupt your save.

Ah ok, well good to know its cause then.

@AzureTerra -- I encountered that issue myself before I ever made this mod. It's a bug in the base game. Your second Faction soldier will always be random. I have tried to locate the bug to create a fix, but I just can't find the underlying cause in the code.

I dont know if its thing with this mod or not but my game is not using Faction soliders from my pool, recruited a 2nd Skirmisher and it made a new random gen one instead of picking the other Pre made Skirmisher and did the same when i found the Reapers

@Darkangel_7939: Dragon32 is correct. The problem you're having isn't in this mod. It's a part of the base game. But you can fix it with this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1125727531

I has always bugged me that I have all my guys uselessly sitting in the recruit screen game. Then, mid game...I get rando-dude "Landon Mills" as a mission reward and he outranks all of my carefully crafted soldiers. Irked me so bad, I started looking into modding myself...and was a bit discouraged when I realized that it might be awhile before I could run a new campaign the way I wanted. Then lo and behold...I stumble across your mod.

You've really just made my day my dude. :)

@SaintKnave --

I've got around 25 soldiers in my character pool (Not counting Faction / Sparks) and after doing some more testing it looks like it was just a bit of bad luck. I've also worked in your advice about lowering the starting number of recruits to 1, excellent suggestion!

After some good deal of testing and swapping mods/tweaks in and out it all seems to be working perfectly!

Thank you once again, both for the mod and for your time! :)

@Wench --

My mod doesn't change your character pool selection method, so, yes -- if you have it set to Pool + Random, then you'll get a mix of your Pool soldiers and random ones. I believe it's a 50/50 mix, so there's always a chance (a 1:2^N chance) that any given sequence of N soldiers will all be random. The mod will still work to extend the life of your Pool, though, because the Recruit list won't be filling up with soldiers unnecessarily.

How many soldiers are in your Pool, incidentally?

PS - Just to clarify!
While testing the mod I noticed that all the soldiers added to the recruit list as a direct result of your mod (IE hire one chump, another shmuck rolls in) all seemed to be random soldiers, none of which were taken from my char-pool. I've got it set to Random+CharPool soldier generation and I did start with a good couple of CharPool soldiers in my roster. Is this working as intended?
