ScholoMatch: Demo is a blend of visual novel meets match-3. A fantastical world of creatures from fairies to werewolves to sirens. Find romance, friendship and adventure!

The Story

As a new student at the Horizon Wizarding Academy deep in the spirit realm you enter a world of magic, fantastical creatures and danger. Meet fellow students, learn magic, date and find romance while you uncover the secrets of the wizarding world and its inhabitants.

The game is not graphic or spicy. There are non-explicit descriptions of sexual activity and some kissing but nothing lewd or really explicit. So hints of spice but nice!

Gameplay & Features

Game settings are limited but include full screen or windowed, and audio settings. You can have up to three saved game files. There is no way to save or load moments in the game so any personal choices are locked in. The game also auto saves after each encounter.

You learn spells by playing match-3 games. And as you successfully complete matches you gain experience. You use your earned xp by opening up your lessons book and leveling up your Fire, Air, Water, Earth, Chaos Pure or Time magics.

You also have a spell book to see what spells you’ve learned. You can assign up to four spells at one time. And lastly there is your friend's book. A place to keep track of the friends you meet and their profiles.

There are a total of 11 friends to meet, each with their own abilities, voice clips, backstories and gameplay mechanics. You can decide to romance the friends you meet or just keep it friendly. And choices you make never block you from any game progression.

The Visuals & Audio

I really love the character art in this game. Anime style with vibrant colors, beautifully illustrated and painted with some small animations to the faces.

The background art is well, not good. I am not sure if this is how the backgrounds will look upon full release but they are messy, scribbled and just thrown in with no real care given to them. What a shame. The characters are so well done, it would have been nice to see the background art get the same treatment as the world map does.

Gorgeous world map.(Night version)

There are some voice overs sprinkled throughout the match-3 encounters. If you get a good combo or match in the match-3 game the other character will sometimes say something encouraging. I swear if Typhon tells me one more time to “keep my wards” up I am going to lose it ". Sometimes the person you're dueling against can talk too much. However I am putting up with his comments so I can romantically pursue him :)

The ambient noises like birds chirping are well done. The background soundtrack is relaxing, and flows well with the magical feel of the game.

What matches look like (the opponent you're against will have buffs as seen in the top left corner above them).

Overall Experience

I really enjoyed this demo. The characters are magical and interesting to meet and learning spells by playing match-3 is fun. Some opponents are pretty tough as they have some very overpowered buffs. So the game does pose a variety of challenges.

There are some fun interactions with each character but it is more of a puzzle game than novel. You don’t have any manual saves so any choices you do make are locked in and the game autosaves after each encounter. But no choice you make will block you from game progression. And you can choose to romance someone (the more you go down that path with a character you will get dialogue options that are romance based).

The blend of match-3 with a visual novel is a great pairing. It brings something fresh to the genre. I highly recommend checking out this demo. 💖
