Still one of the greatest FPS games of all time.

Don't worry about my playtime; I've been running BloodGDX. Speaking of BloodGDX, you'll need it to play on modern systems. Downloading it is a must if you want to enjoy the game properly.

Great protagonist, great weapons, great enemies, and some of the greatest maps of gaming history, including the masterpiece: The Overlooked Hotel. The price is worth it just for that one map alone.

If you are an old-school gamer and you haven't played it - you are really missing out! If you are a younger gamer, then see what it is that makes all of us old people complain about modern games.

100% Genuine 90s FPS Greatness!

OK so I just finished my playthrough and I'm super happy with my purchase. It's every bit as good as the 90s build engine games we loved back in the day - if not better.

Some people might think what I'm about to say is blasphemy but I personally like the new protagonist, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, better than Duke, I think. Not quite as charismatic as Caleb at this stage yet but who knows how the full version will develop her. I hope she has a lot more voice lines in future levels.

The weapons and maps expecially really shine. A small nit-pick but I wish the enemies had more satisfying death sounds (screams) maybe? Blood mastered this.

The secrets are master-crafted. Just excellent. Very original, never too easy, and so many of them, but always a great sense of accomplishment with every one. Lots of in-jokes and humour, too.

Combat is excellent and punchy but some enemies are hard to see against the background and also even on the hardest difficulty it can be a bit too easy for anyone used to the other build engine games. Hopefully the full version will made hard mode harder or introduce more difficulty settings beyond hard.

Surprisingly had some choppy framerate issues at first but after some tweaking was eventually able to sort that out and now running at 1000fps+. The solution is to turn off Steam overlay, turn off vsync in the options AND in the nvidia control panel, and don't have firefox, etc. running. The downside is that without vsync you get screen tearing. Please fix this, Voidpoint!

Excellent game. Every bit as good as the amazing screenshots look. Actually, it's now my No. 1 game I'm looking forward to release right now. Instant classic.

EDIT: changed review to add what I did to increase framerate, also added part about wanting harder modes.

For me, this is the best game of the decade; even better than excellent Prey, etc. It reminds me of the golden era of immersive sims, back when the original Deus Ex and System Shock 2 came out. Although obviously this is a very different kind of game, I feel it has the same soul as those sorts of games. I thought I hated medieval settings but apprently I only hate medieval fantasy - this historically accurate setting is interesting and refreshing and I'm learning a lot about medieval europe. Fantastic open world yet the story is also very interesting and the writing is great. The only complaints I have are the same as eveyone else - a 'save on exit' option (for when you need to get off the computer quickly - although that's coming in a patch soon), and the occasional bug - but I guess anything major has or will be patched out. EDIT: Fixed!

Brilliant game. Definitely, definitely recommend.

Brilliant game; my favourite 'creative' sandbox game of all time. Educational, configurable, and entertaining. You could play this game forever.

Great tool - Does its job very well.

Doesn't seem to effect performance; has millions of options. I'll be using this from now on until eventually we get wireless headsets, I guess. Thank you to the developer for creating this and releasing it for free!

Excellent port of an already excellent game!

Croteam have been doing so well porting their games to VR; all the options you can think of are there. And the price is so low! I loved the pancake version but this is even better. Let's hope we get a VR version of Serious Sam 4 when it's out!

Actually very good now some of the more major issues have been addressed!

Well they botched the release with the blurriness issue etc. but now that it's fixed it's really quite good. It's far from perfect; the performance is not very good even with solid hardware, and there are all sorts of bugs, but the base experience of playing Fallout in VR is very solid. They got the controls / movement down quite well for people like me who like to have the option of locomotion.

I would definitely recommend the game, even in its current state. Not many VR games allow for extended playtimes like Fallout 4 VR does. Here are some issues that could be fixed to change it from a very good game to an amazing one:

  • Improved performance
  • Graphics options in the menu so we don't have to play with .ini files
  • Better visibility of iron sights. Even 'glowing' ironsights are too dull
  • Working scopes or at least a compromise. Currently scopes are useless
  • General bug fixing

Let's hope they continue to release patches, etc.

Edit: I'm taking a break playing Fallout 4 VR until I upgrade my graphics card as it was so good I want to enjoy it fully with better graphics and smoother framerates. I think its worth the purchase / wait.

It is a crime that this game isn't more well known. Great fun with a huge amount of choice in how you want to approach each mission. The detailed little sprites are very nice to look at. The gameplay is deep and sandboxy. The devs are constantly updating and improving the game even though it came out quite some time ago. Excellent for binging or as a coffee break game. Well worth the low price!

I just purchased and played for an hour. I'll probably update my review once I have so more time with the game but so far it has been very good. The wide range of locomotion, teleportation, and comfort options should be enough to satisfy (almost) everyone. The atmosphere is great and the puzzles are interesting. It's good to have a VR game with a good deal of content!

No hyperbole; the best game of the decade (for me).

At first I was not convinced by the screenshots and trailers, but I was totally wrong about this game.

In my opinion, this is the best game to come out in at least 10 years, possibly more. I am a huge fan of System Shock 2, yet Prey has completely blown it out of the water in every respect for me. Please know that I look at System Shock 2 with rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia from playing it as a young teenager and even then Prey wins out. It also borrows a lot of elements from the original Deus Ex, it seems. It's like the devs got the feel and gameplay from all of the greatest games of the PC gaming golden age of very late 90s/early 00s and gave it all the technical improvements from the last 20 years without dumbing it down or removing complexity like the Bioshock series did.

The star of the game is the space station, which is so convincing as a place I could explore it forever. I can pass through a room 20 times yet still find some secret or details I missed the previous times.

I am usually stressed by horror games, but this one's scary bits are balanced out with large chunks of quiet exploration. It works really well in my opinion. This might be seen as a negative for people who like being constantly terrified or just want to 'shoot baddies' but if that's what your after then there are plenty of games all over Steam that already cater to those sorts of gameplay.

If you are a fan of System Shock 2 or the original Deus Ex, this is the game you've been waiting for. Prey does such a good job at being the System Shock 3 that I always wanted that I doubt the actual recently announced System Shock 3 will beat it. It would be nice to be surprised, though!

Prey deserves to be an absolute smash hit. It's the first game in a long time that really treats the player like an intelligent adult and doesn't water down the complexity. The devs made this game with incredible skill and thought and it shows.

Please buy this game to encourage the devs and the game development industry as a whole that this is the kind of game we want!
