I realy like Europa Universalis IV, as i played now over 1600 Hours. You can have fun with these games, spend hour after hour with it. I also played Multiplayers in a bigger scale for over two years. I will not say the game is bad or not worth a bit of money...but there is a big argument against this game, or i would say against the DLC-Policy of Paradox. It is just insane how this is managed. Just take a look at the numbers...
Steam tells me all DLC cost more than 230€ now. Okay lets say half of that is stuff you dont need, content packs etc...still 130€ plus the game for 40€. Iam no new player and played from the first years on and bought everything when it came out. But do you even know how stupid it is if you have friends just starting the game and telling them which DLC they need and stuff?
They release a new DLC every few months with a few new things. Often they are good and iam very exited. But the are not everytime worth all the money. And they must be making alot of money thinking about the price. And i know...they say we put out new DLC to get some money to further develop the game and the game will get new content as long as the people buy the DLCs. Okay, that may sound good at first. But how do other game studios manage their stuff? Do they need to get out new DLC every few months for 20-30€(DLC+Contentpack)? NO. And that is almost the price of the whole game. And a DLC might bring some new stuff but not half of the game. So it is just too expensive.
But it does not stop there. Iam a real Paradox-Freak you could say. I play almost all their big titles, Victoria, Crusader Kings, Stellaris, City Skylines, Hearts of Iron...you name it, i played hundreds of hours. And almost everywhere it is the same b*llsh*t!!! I want to play some Crusader Kings? Have to buy 2-3 DLCs to be on the newest Version. Stellaris the same. HoI4 the same. Skylines the same. What is that? I was so hyped about Stellaris. And the game was only half done, felt hollow and now they probably want to go the EU4 way and fix it over the years with tons of DLC. I just cant stand it anymore. After these many years iam frustrated and angry. I dont want to support this any longer. And what i hate the most about it, that maybe in a few months, i have some money, theres a sale and i will buys this freakin DLC anyway. BUT I HATE THEIR POLICY! AND I STILL WANT TO PLAY THAT STUFF! THEY GOT ME AND THEY USE ME! Combining all their game i probably payed them over 1000€ already. *Put a bad word here*!
But they could do it differently. Why not bring out REAL DLC or a decent Add-On. Or Victoria 3. Where the hell is Victoria 3? Victoria was the best game they made in my opinion. But whatever. Someday Paradox will see that their way is the wrong way. Many people i know think the same. They are ruining these great games.
tl;dr: If you are looking for an advice...the game is fun and you will probably like it. But Paradox has a real ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLC-Policy. After a few years you will hate them, just like me.
EDIT (from Commentsection 07.04.2017): I like the game and i have fun. Iam only using this review as the only form of protest i have besides not buying the DLC. I hope it has an impact, but iam not sure. Iam happy to see, that they have bigger Bundles now that combine different DLCs. So the packages are bigger now. That is a step in the right direction. I think this was partly done because people like me, who love the game, complain and are not brainwashed like the fanboys. Just because a game is very good, that does not mean you cant say something critical about it. I will give a positive review when iam happy with the the way the next DLCs will be.
