Celeste, a game which can only be described as a masterpiece of gameplay, storytelling, visuals, difficulty, music, and accessibility. Nearly every aspect about this game is incredibly well made and deserves its overwhelming amount of positive reviews.

Celeste can be very, very difficult at times, but it allows access to G̶a̶m̶e̶ ̶J̶o̶u̶r̶n̶a̶l̶i̶s̶t̶s̶ "Bad" players, with it's assist mode. Assist mode allows for the customization of several game aspects, and allows for the player to slow down the game speed, invincibility, number of dashes. It allows for even the youngest of players to be able to enjoy the story, and game of Celeste.

The plot isn't just your generic, don't give up. The story is incredibly heartfelt, and keeps the player involved with its characters, and messages. Despite only having 5 characters, each character is really charming and entertaining characters. Most of the chapters are entirely dedicated to developing a character while at the same time teaching new ideas. The character development is perfectly blended into the gameplay, neither of which become more dominant than the other.

The game has seven (8) chapters. Each chapter has a new mechanic or multiple new mechanics, and each of these mechanics is very subtly yet manages to be easily learned and not be a reskin of another mechanic. The difficulty curve is very reasonable, maintaining a steady increase of difficulty, not getting much more difficult in an instant. Every chapter is significantly different in terms of visuals, and their individual gimmicks, which sets them apart from each other, and makes them much more memorable than forgettable.

Though the game may seem incredibly easy to any dedicated, or skilled player. The game doesn't just end after 7 chapters, it adds a whole new level set not related to the story, but makes your original chapters way more challenging, yet still fun. Even though you may have learned all the basic mechanics, these levels still manage to give new techniques based off the already taught mechanics.

When attempting the 3HR speedrun myself, I had jotted down steps to help me along. I thought I would share this with everyone else attempting this who, like me, is really not much of a speedrunner and who would just like to have an easy guide to follow.

You start with Mario – the wholesome all Italian plumbing superman, you reflect him to create Luigi – the same thing but slightly less. You invert Mario to create Wario – Mario turned septic and libertarian – then you reflect the inversion in the reflection: you create a being who can only exist in reference to others. Waluigi is the true nowhere man, without the other characters he reflects, inverts and parodies he has no reason to exist. Waluigi’s identity only comes from what and who he isn’t – without a wider frame of reference he is nothing. He is not his own man.
