Having been a long time player of Elite, I was eager to get my hands on No Man's Sky from the point of the NEXT update in order to see what I'd been missing. I'd say that No Man's Sky is more Minecraft than Elite Dangerous, in fact having a candy cane look to the game and atmosphere that takes it away from being a simulation and more puts it in the realm of eye candy.

The palette is actually quite nice, but does give it a bit of a surreal atmosphere akin to old school video games.

The graphics are very nice and despite running the game on an old LGA775 quad core system Win10x64 8GB ram, after much tweaking I was able to get an appreciable frame rate. Not a great framerate but certainly good enough to play without sacrificing the graphics setings too much.

The music and audio are great, bringing atmospheric tunes to the background during exploration and grinding (to collect crafting resources).

The story slowly unfolds as you make progress throughout the universe. I haven't been any further than my starting system yet, so I've not seen much. I've heard there's a lot of variety to see in the game in terms of randomly generated scenery and the life forms that populate the various planets.

This game is not the Elite killer for certain, for it is completely a different experience altogether. The only similarity is that it takes place in a futuristic science fiction open world. In fact the two games complement different kinds of gameplay and quell very different cravings for challenge in such experiences. There are Elite days, and there are NMS days and for every player they'll be different.

Pros
+ Good graphics though the palette is a bit like candy. Candy is good, but too much can give you a sugar hangover.
+ Gameplay is good though sometimes dealing with hostile lifeforms and drones on planets can be frustrating. You'll be making a few trips to your last death position to collect the loot from your prior life.
+ Variety is certainly at play here and there are many things to discover and see including scenery, lifeforms and mysteries.
+ Its difficult to sum up the quality of a piece of work that a small team have literally put a decade of their life into crafting. While playing, you're going to encounter a lot of their creativity and craftiness but chances are no amount of words can sum that up here. You've got to play it for yourself.
+ Random variety seems to be shaped in such a way that makes sense. For instance, you won't see fish with legs too often. Most of the evolutionary traits of creatures makes exploration rewarding. Sometimes its just fun to stand back and watch the ecosystems in action.

Cons
- Demanding in terms of hardware. Tweakable but still demanding which can be frustrating if you're dealing with hostile species or drones while grinding for crafting resources.
- Planetary in atmosphere flight is a little dodgy and difficult as well. Don't expect yourself to be a flying ace with how the ship(s) are controlled. A stable yaw control with hovering would be nice and make collecting your lost crafting resources much easier and less frustrating. Being able to control your ship like a helicopter while in the atmosphere would be a big improvement.

Overall, the game at its current state (Abyss Update) is well worth the asking price of $60 CDN given the variety of features and content, though I fortunately managed to get it on sale and if you see it on sale, don't miss the opportunity.

I've never played this during its earlier incarnations so I'm not going to comment on that issue. I recommend this game, but not as an alternative to Elite Dangerous because its completely a different kind of game.
