Early Access Review
New Review:

ACTUALLY, the game has gotten so much more content and the moderation team has eased up considerably. The game is very much worth the purchase today, and worthy of countless hours to be poured in. It's a great place to make new friends! Performance issues are the only thing holding back this great game.

Most if not all of my complaints in my old review have been dissolved.

Old Review:

This game could be one of the best on Steam, that much is true. You can have a lot of fun with it, as it has a modest but entertaining player base that always surprised me every time I logged on. You'll tend to find regulars playing consistently, so it's a good place to make friends with and mess around. There's tons of customization for both your character and your virtual house. Despite a plethora of bug fixes and awkward technicalities, these don't pose *too* much of a threat on the enjoyment for anyone's play-through. The mini-games are good time-wasters, and range from good for a few matches (Little Crusaders) to a reason to log on every day (Virus, Minigolf). The truth is, though, that unless you get *deep* into the community and play pretty much everyday, you're not gonna get the bang for your buck. It's not worth it for a quick, short-term experience-- this is one of those long-term relationship games. Keep that in mind if you read the rest.

Unfortunately, the deal breaker for me lies in the questionable moderation of the game itself. It seems that the most fun you can have on the official servers is when the Pixeltail administrators are not online. People tend to filter themselves / suck-up to the staff, which is in all fairness a problem with any community and not a reason to diss the game itself, and I wouldn't bring this up if the moderation for the game weren't so inconsistent. As I said before, most of the unique fun from the game is brought by the community's wild antics-- whether that be through thematic/hilarious micspamming (imagine a guy using a Toyota Civic playermodel running around in circles blasting "Tokyo Drift" on the main lobby) or meeting a group of obscene-humored gentlemen throwing joking insults and profanities left and right. If the Pixeltail staff is on and catches you doing any of this stuff, even if everyone else in the server is having a good time and playing along, you will be punished for breaking their rules. Furthermore, there is a server-shared theater where you can put any YouTube video on it and watch together with friends or strangers. Pixeltail Games says that no 'inappropriate' videos should be played on the theater, and for them, this includes music videos without visuals that have a bad word in them, and many of my friends have been theater-banned because of this. On the other hand, the game depicts realistic gambling and drinking. This leads me to believe that the Pixeltail staff are fence-sitting on what target audience they're aiming for. Certain workshop playermodels are also removed because they're too provocative (can't show too much butt on a female model, fair enough), but others that are JUST as revealing and explicit are okay for some reason? (a Billy Herrington model shown in bare masculine figure, with nothing but a tight speedo hugging his man-bulge is a-okay).

If it were up to me, I'd say to heck with it and allow anything from the community as long as it was okay with Steam's own Community Guidelines. Pixeltail uses their own guidelines when they feel like it. That, alongside other shady business practices (etc., sharing false Indiegogo footage with better graphics and incomplete/missing content ; raising the price of the game to $20 despite saying beforehand that they would never charge more), makes me overall doubt the game's future. It can become something very special, very fun, and very popular-- but under the hands that run it, I can't consciously recommend it to someone curious about it. As much as they put in good content into the game in each new update, the admins take inconsistent community decisions that makes me doubt the game and its community will be as good or enjoyable in the future for the long-term user.

Borderlands 2 dwarfs this poor little game in both content and replay value-- this is true.

However, TPS is a unique little experience of it's own. Though it reuses a lot of 2's graphics and the atmospheres were a bit less creative this time around, TPS makes this up with awesome skill trees and, more importantly, "vaulthunter.exe".

Seriously, "vaulthunter.exe" alone makes this purchase worth it.
