If ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ management spared a dollar the entire tunnel communication network could've been serviced by a raspberry pi. Instead you get to enjoy the experience of trying to get internet to an ungrateful 10 year old.

Calling it a rail shooter or weird FPS isn't the best way to describe this game. I would go in with the expectation of a dungeon crawler that just so happens to be a precision gimmick shooter with puzzle elements and somehow reminds me of Donkey Kong because you can change characters at anytime, barring certain story sections.

Presentation and sound are excellent, with shooting and puzzles being satisfying enough that exploring through maps is actually somewhat stressful given how much more important encounters are, compared to a more shooter happy game.

Playing with a controller is fine, in fact I'd actually recommend using a controller over M/KB by virtue of the game not being a twitch shooter. You'll want to make sure in the games launcher the stick deadzones match your controllers set deadzones, through Steam or natively.

Of course if you don't prefer controller that's perfectly fine, but modern FPS conventions don't work here. MK/B setup is more akin to classic Resident Evil 4 or Bioshock Infinite.

I wholly recommend Zeeker's previous works if you like what's here.

The work that led up to Lethal Company is just as stellar and worth your time, they really showcase the dev's ability to understand comic timing and what makes a person tick.

The actual game itself is good, what with the class systems and the plethora of equipment one can try and experiment with for their classes and builds. I had fun with the gunplay and figuring out my Veteran's build while balancing it against the possible squad composition. Unfortunately I found the other classes boring but I understand their appeal, Ogrin mentality notwithstanding.

The problem is that the game itself, and I imagine Fatshark by extension, does not respect your time.

The entire equipment system is built towards the endgame, requiring you to purposely buy low quality equipment, enchanting it, then scraping said equipment just to keep the enchantment that can be used elsewhere. After that you still need to stop by the equipment shop every hour to wait for it to refresh and hope to see something ideal come along that's worth buying.

There's supposed to be a special shop that has separate currency system that can only be acquired through the sub-quests, but those subquests are anywhere from mundane (play 8 games) to just outright stupid (find 4 grimoires/scrolls). These subquests end up being co-op unfriendly or a waste of time, as it incentivize players to speed run low level missions, ignore looting for materials, or dooming runs as grimoires give a debuff while simultaneously consuming your equipment slot that could've had a health or ammo pack. It's a double whammy too, grimoire collection is rarely worth the bonus reward, as it's worth more completing the mission.

Even if you do bother completing the special shop's subquests it's not worth buying much from there as the current meta is very much buying low rank equipment in bulk, as crafting is much reliable in giving you the modifiers and stats you want. You can't brute force shopping there either, as side quests refresh weekly and the shop everyday, and you generally only earn enough for 1-3 purchases every week.

Looking past equipment, looking at missions and maps, it's not great. Don't get me wrong, the art direction and design of the locales themselves are very pretty, but level design lends itself to being lazy and boring. It's extremely rare the map has a spot where there isn't an inaccessible door where the horde director spawns specials/mobs on you, so you're left with a gank fest most of the time, getting blind sided as the horde director cheeses you. I've only been able to tolerate it as the Veteran's volley fire allows x-ray vision, so it's absolutely absurd to watch specials just sit behind the impenetrable door as I wait for them to walk outside.

Most of the time it's outright homogeneous, there's only so much grey corridor, sandy exterior, or elevator action I can take. Mission selection is basically Mass Effect where Admiral Hackett is rolling dice to ad lib your mission objectives. It's rare I get moments where you're fighting through crowds of undead trying to make your way to the safe room. No, I find myself with the rest of the squad hunkering down because running away means the AI will magically catch up to you and stagger you out of running, putting yourself in an extremely vulnerable position.

The game isn't bad, and much of the early adopters will tell you it's in a much better state than previously of which is absolutely true. But this game is absolutely not in a full release, it should really be considered Early Access with much of the original road map done.

But then, if mediocrity is acceptable then I guess Halo Infinite is a better game. Pick the game up on sale, because Fatshark will get your money through the cosmetic shop anyway. Or buy Deep Rock Galatic, a game in which most aspects actually competes with this game and does it better. Or play Path of Exile, if you like class building. Or even Destiny, the gunplay is better and the equipment progression/modifers is actually interesting instead of just flat-this number-makes-the-damage-go-up (for the most part anyway, I won't deny the game wastes your time in different ways)

Or just play Left 4 Dead 2, the real OG and it's just plain fun. Bonus points for not needing a fancy system just to make the game run properly when you get swarmed, or ray-tracing for that matter. It even runs on a hard drive and still loads faster!

Never had a game question my own morality as I attempted to take a hard line stance in the game. Someone's going to get hurt, and you can't just walk away either. You're not the good guy here, and neither is anyone else.

For those who like to tinker with various setups and mechs, while dealing with an xcom style scenario, this is a very nice gem in the rough.

That being said, even if you're someone who isn't afraid to understand unbelievably dense systems, this is pretty up there in how detailed things can get, and the relative lack of information can be very off putting. Don't get me wrong, as of the very recent Update 60 the Dev made a great effort to fix most of those short comings, but sometimes it doesn't quite feel like enough.

Which is in fact by design. To a certain point the Dev is trying to make the game obscure enough where the player is left to their own devices, to discover various problems and implement solutions as possible. As you progress through the game, new tech and production does indeed dramatically change how you approach building your mechs.

But then again with how seemingly difficult the first 6 hours can be it's going to be off putting for many people, and the likely hood you make it to mid-game can be low without losing to attrition because of the lack of certain knowledge. Ballistics matter. Going under water is a death sentence. Just deploying a damaged mech might not be worth it, but leaving the squad short a hand will be felt dearly. I actually spent a great deal of time in the Steam forums because of how vague some details were.

Ultimately, I'm leaving this review positive, because the groundwork for what's here is amazing, as it's not often you come across a solid (if slightly crusty) mech builder combined with hardcore X-COM mechanics.

I just hope the Dev continues to make effective progress, there's still a lot to do, it seems

It's a very good atmospheric dungeon crawler. The art direction and graphics are solid, as the game doesn't try to be the prettiest thing out there. In some cases it's fairly retro, with the aesthetic and level design intersecting with 80's and 90's scifi elements.

The game itself has enough going on to make you consider when it's appropriate to be using melee, shoot it out, or maybe just sneak around enough to get the drop on an enemy. The lean and peak feature is very important here.

How the game approaches difficulty might be the best part of the game. You could really just treat the game as an action survival, and keep all the puzzles simple. Or you could keep combat simple but have hardcore elements turned on, If you die in the game, you die in real life .

The game's greatest weakness is the inventory and junk system. It's possible to recycle various items for scrap, then trade scrap for credits. Some items are worth more upfront than being scrapped, at the expense of inventory space. The problem is that there's junk everywhere, to the point where it's possible to ruin the economy of the game. At worst, if you're a loot goblin like me, you're going to find yourself backtracking to the recycling machine very often. I caught myself doing that, but you can't ignore the need for some credits for upgrades, so I would say scrap everything as you go, only depositing it when you feel the need for more credits. This isn't a game about being a mule, I'd play Death Stranding instead. It's unfortunate there isn't a more nuanced crafting system, as this would avoid the tedium altogether, say like 2017's Prey.

The compounding problem is that it's possible to carry multiple of the same weapons, and it turns out you can't recycle them at all. The best you can do is to unload the weapons you find and ditch them.

Ultimately I think the new System Shock is a solid game, and worth it's 40 dollars asking price. I would go into the game with the mindset of exploring and dealing with encounters as you go, I absolutely would not recommend you try and min max the game.

Edit:

To add on, I would really like it if the game had true HDR support, this is one of the few times where it can really shine. It would also be nice if it had better support for multi monitors, as it requires setting my monitors as "Primary" in Windows for it to work.
