Early Access Review
Do NOT buy this game in its current state. It's a reskin of Ark that is somehow WORSE than Ark. If you look in the games install folder, there are folders literally called ScorchedEarth and Abberation just reusing assets from Ark. And on top of that, if you have a controller plugged in, scroll down to the bottom of the options on the main menu. If you scroll down 1 more past that, there's another invisible menu option. Hit A or X or whatever on your controller, and it opens up THE ARK MENU. It even shows options to choose which Ark DLC you want to play, edit map options, etc. The best part is that under that option, you can see the choices for all of the types of Ark worlds, and theres one addition to that list! Ocean. That's right, this game was built as a DLC of Ark. It functions through Ark's menus, and in that menu it is classified just like Ark's released DLCs.

For a game that according to the developers "has a chance to be the greatest of all time", this is utter garbage. It is literally a reskinned Ark that is less functional. Look back at Ark's development. Launched early access for $30, then a paid $20 DLC was released IN EARLY ACCESS, and then the price later went up to $60 and ANOTHER paid DLC came out. Be smart, expect the same from Atlas.

UPDATE 9:30 AM, 12/23/2018:

Now that the servers are "joinable", there's even more of a reason to wait before buying, if you plan on buying this at all. When you join, you choose one of the freeports or lawless zones. If you're lucky enough to find one that doesn't tell you that it is capped, you also have to find one that actually lets you spawn on the island.

In the last half hour, I tried 10+ different starting zones. Only 2 of them let me spawn on the actual island. The other ones were completely broken spawns. Most of them just throw you in the middle of the ocean with the island barely visible in the distance. You'll be surrounded by other unlucky players and laggy eels and other fish that just kill you. There are also a few islands that are even worse. They spawn you in the ground a few feet under the island. The game lets you move around for a few seconds, then it freezes you in place for a bit before opening the menu that lets you choose a new island or respawn in the same place again.

Once you find one of the holy grail zones that place you where you're supposed to be, the game is so laggy that it renders it basically unplayable. All the players and animals rubberband constantly, and it takes a few seconds after gathering for the item to appear in your inventory. The creature AI is ridiculously bad, with birds flying into the ground, and crocodiles climbing straight vertical cliffsides.

All these flamers in here are so stupid lol All companies reuse assests....go cry somewhere else. As if WC is the first company to ever do this. Why would you use an entirely new engine and recreate everything when you don't have to?!!? At least the animal they did copy have been reskinned. Additionally the land masses/architecture/boats/ports etc. are all new and not copied. Most of these ragers are from day 1-2 of the server and their complaints are no longer relevant. The game runs fine now and is actually enjoyable. As with most early access games, there is work to be done...hence early access. Learn to read before you buy ding dongs.

First off, it's not a reskin. It uses some very similar elements as Ark, but the coding wasn't copied and pasted. They just used a lot of the same ideas and coded the game from scratch.

Second, it's 'somehow' worse than ARK, because ARK has been developed for years, released, reworked, unbugged, balanced, changed, fixed and fixed some more. Atlas is new and still very early access. How long has this game been on steam EA? Do you even remember how ARK was at the same level of development? Horrible.

Third, it's Early Access. Complaining about Early access games is like complaining about your house not being livable, before the construction crew is finished building it. You reviewers are what's wrong with EA, not the games.

@Jolnir How can he refund a bad game if he goes over the tiny, strict time limit oh brave private profiler?

Good review, but bad as you slagged off ark which is brilliant if you have the ability to stay focused on a game (try the unofficial servers)

I don't own this game, nor do I ever want to own it. Early Access is just about the biggest scam in all of entertainment. I can't think of an analogous industry where people pay to be punished and receive unfinished content under the guise of 'you knew what you were getting into'.

If someone is charging you for something, it better damn well work.

Early Access creates the dillemma for the publishers, where they have to generate content for players, fix bugs & broken mechanics (the real purpose) & generate revenue for the business. The incentive to actually develop the game properly to its intended final product disappears when the game is available to purchase, as they've already recieved a lot of revenue and probably wont receive a lot more upon 100% release.

If you want to look at early access successes, look at Deep Rock Galactic. That's a game which has solid mechanics, works, and is incredibly fun.
