Good news, everyone!
Roses and Wine's[forums.qhimm.com] .ogg files work perfectly with Maki's "Demaster" mod [forums.qhimm.com]Maki's "Demaster" mod!

Demaster unpacks the game's archives and allows individual files to be replaced. Extract the latest Demaster release to the game's directory, and run ffviii_demaster_manager.exe once to get the file directories set up.

Rename the .ogg files in "Final Fantasy VIII\\RaW\GLOBAL\Music" (assuming you have it installed on the original Steam version) to match those in "FINAL FANTASY VIII Remastered\DEMASTER_EXP\data\music\dmusic\ogg", and copy them over the ones in the Remaster's folder.
For example: "001 The Winner.ogg" becomes "001s-win.ogg"

Enjoy!

Yes, that will still work.
The only gameplay change is that Angelo Search's item finding has been increased to compensate for the removal of Chocobo World. Aside from that, every gameplay mechanic in the game 100% works like it always had.

They didn't "forget".
They updated models but didn't add new ones where there weren't previously. That Cid was always an intractable part of the 2D background.

As Steam's Big Picture Mode translates any controller to act like an Xinput controller, any will work. The DualShock 4 is the most comfortable one to me, so I recommend it.

After you installed the fonts, did you make sure that the font file was in the correct location?

Graphical remasters of games never remove core mechanics, and there is nothing "broken" about it. You can become laughably overpowered without ever drawing magic from monsters at all.
Even early in the game, you can play Triple Triad for cards to refine into items/magic to the extent to make the rest of the game into a cakewalk if you want to.
If you're sitting there farming monsters for magic instead of just refining, you're playing the game wrong.

I've not played in years, myself, but as long as you already have a level 40 character already, you can make a reaper. They start at level 50 and let you hit the ground running.

In general, when a game is released on consoles long before PC, the game tends to be designed around controller input, so they tend to play better than with mouse and keyboard.
