So firstly a rather large caveat: This is probably the worst platform to get Shovel Knight on.
The Wii U, 3DS, PS3, PS4, PSP and Xbox One versions of Shovel Knight all have one or two bonus features thrown in.
That having been said these are bonus features and their absence doesn't detract from the overall experience.

The Main Game
Shovel Knight is a solidly crafted game which combines retro gameplay and aesthetics with some more modern elements.
Shovel Knight has a simple but charming story of the titular Knight venturing to vanquish evil and find his lost companion, the world of Shovel Knight is made vibrant through it's characters, levels and music. All in all, a sublime game.
But wait there's more!
Shovel Knight has three planned free expansions, the first of these 'The Plague of Shadows' has already arrived and blew me away in terms of what to expect. Plague Knight was difficult to control at first with his erratic playstyle but in time I was blasting away with the best of them. Seein the world of Shovel Knight through the eyes of the mad alchemist was also a treat adding more dimensions and depth not only to Plague Knight but also to the other inhabitants of the Valley through how differently they interact with Plague Knight compared to Shovel Knight.
The Second of these campaigns 'The Specter of Torment' is currently scheduled for spring 2017 and I await with bated breath!

In conclusion, if you like retro inspired games Shovel Knight is a must have and well worth it's price tag.
