When you compare this to Autonauts you could say: Same, but different and better.

Same, because core mechanic didn't change. You program bots to achieve game goals.
Different, because the main goal and story is new, you have new ways for programming bots and new reasons to do so.
Better, because it has a lot of new features and QoL changes added and it's more fun to play it.

If you like Autonauts, you will love Autonauts vs Piratebots.

I would recommend to start with Autonauts. Especially now, because there is a lot happening currently. All QoL changes from AvPB have been moved to Autonauts and devs add even more. Unless you don't like chill games and prefer some threats in games then AvPB is the better choice.
